Without the Soy, please!!!

My family and I love Asian foods. However, the problem we run into is a high percentage of the recipes call for soy sauce. My wife and daughter are allergic to soy and we all can do without the high level of salt. Are there recipes without soy or substitutes that can be used and still retain the flavor and integrity of the dish.

Coconut aminos are a soy free (and gluten and dairy free) replacement for soy sauce.

Some Whole Foods stores carry Coconut Secret brand.

There are times when you can substitute fish sauce for soy sauce and there are of course plenty of Asian foods that don't have soy sauce. It all depends on what kind of dish you are looking for.

There is one recipe floating around on the net that a soy allergic coworker of mine swears by. It is called "No soy soy sauce." It is vinegar based and not sure what else.

Just looked it up...again, I can't personally vouch for the results, but this is the recipe:

        No-Soy Sauce

        4 tablespoons beef bouillon
        4 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
        2 teaspoons dark molasses
        1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
        1 pinch white pepper
        1 pinch garlic powder
        1 1/2 cups water

Sir everything together in a pot over medium heat. Simmer until it has reduced to about a cup (roughly 15 minutes).
