Best Market in Holmdel?

EL7 Feb 16, 2012 06:59 PM

I just read Best Market located at the Holmdel Commons shopping center on Route 35, opened today. It is a food market based in Long Island opening here now. Anyone ever hear of it? Hopefully it is something good!

My wife went yesterday. She was no fan of Top Tomato, but she liked Best Market... which she says is more focused (compared to Top Tomato) on produce rather than prepared foods. I hope to get over there today to check it out myself.

The produce might have looked better than TT (which at the time seemed consistently over ripe) but the prices and choices at Best M are no more, no less than any other grocer along the highway.

Best Market's deli and prepared foods are still going to have to compete with their surrounding, long established stores. I wish them only luck. And, I look forward to reading your impression drongo.

I went this morning. It is very reminiscent of the Top Tomato that was in the same space -- Best Market re-used the same basic layout.

The quality and prices of the produce, cheeses, and meat were good... though we'll need to see how they are once the store reaches more of a steady state.

I agree with HillJ. I think they'll struggle to differentiate themselves from the local competition. In my opinion, Top Tomato potentially had more of its own niche with its prepared foods and Italian focus. I'm not sure that Best Market has anything compelling enough to get me to drive out of my way to go there. Except for the nice race car out front today!

I stopped in today. It looks like Top Tomato with different signage. The produce seems a little fresher, but TT looked pretty good its first couple weeks.

However, I did have a problem. I bought one thing that rang up wrong. It rang the regular price, not the well marked sale price. (They did give it to me free, though.) And the apples were a disorganized mess. The batches frequently did not correspond with the signs.

I might stop in if I'm close by, but I'm more likely to go to Dearborn Farms instead. I'll give it a year or less.

I went back today because my daughter loved Best Market's sweet red bell peppers so much she insisted I get some more! The produce still looks good, and I bought about a dozen things. Also some cheeses (which they tempted me into with free samples....).

As with cantkick, I found that they can ring things up incorrectly. When I got home I noticed that the red peppers appeared on the receipt as red Bartlett pears (which were a little more expensive per lb) and the black grapes showed up as red grapes (same price). In my case, I think it was not a computer issue but rather the inexperience of the cashier -- she had to ask me what the green beans were (she thought they were some kind of pea, which actually is pretty close) and also what the parsley was.

Too cute! In another post you wrote "I'm not sure that Best Market has anything compelling enough to get me to drive out of my way to go there"

Nothing touches my heart more than a parent's love for their child! You made my day Drongo!

Very brave given the surrounding markets and economy. I'm heading over later today to check out the produce and deli; two dept. I judge most food stores by.

Okay, just returned. No real bargains found and I really see no difference btwn this market and what Top Tomato was trying to offer in the same space last year.

Thanks HillJ! I was hoping for more, oh well. I never cared for Top Tomato. I know a lot of people liked it. I was hoping this would be something to get excited about, now I guess I'll get there when I get there. Thanks for the info and the trip.

Here's an APP story about it. It's in the space that was briefly Top Tomato.
