Label's Table -- Best Westside Pastrami Sandwich

  • n

I've been to just about all -- Junior's, Factor's, Fromin's, etc. My clear favorite for a pastami on rye is Label's Table, on the south side of Pico a few blocks east of Beverly, with parking in the rear. It is an order at the counter sort of place, with plenty of seating to eat. I order the pastrami fatty, and out comes a huge pastrami sandwich on standard deli rye, seeded with a chew on the crust, with enough meat piled high in the center for at least another half sandwich. All of this for $8.50 plus tax, at least a couple of bucks less than the above competitors for a bigger sandwich. A new addition to my lunch rotation.

No, it is not Langer's. The pastrami is thin machine-sliced and the rye is not as crisp on the crust and soft in the middle. But it is a lot closer, a lot bigger, and a lot less expensive.

Tell me more about the sandwich specials -- didn't see mentioned on the website. Note, I'm talking about the westside Pico location, not the Woodland Hills.

      2. You should try the (frequent special) old-fashioned pastrami when it is on offer at Jeff's Gourmet Sausages--it is every bit as good as described in the below post:

        1. I agree with you about Label's Table. As far as Langer's is concerned, what they call pastrami is really corned beef. As far as Jeff's Sausages is concerned, I went there once and thought the sausage I ordered was tasteless and the place was not clean.

The picture doesn't prove anything. A char can appear on a slice of prime rib, steak, etc. In my opinion, the so called pastrami at Langer's is under-spiced and closer to corned beef than pastrami, which after all is the same basic meat product, except for the spicing.

Char? Even if it were corned beef, as you attest, when was the last time you had charred corned beef? That dark layer is a rub, and it is what makes pastrami pastrami.

If you take a look (or better yet taste test) Langer's corned beef you will see that their pastrami is definitely pastrami. I am going to try linking a photo of the corned beef at Langer's here: http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&am... and we'll see what happens.

                  > Ain't no way that's corned beef.

Mr Taster, that photo is definitely NSFW.

Langer's pastrami is not corned beef

                    >>Langer's pastrami is not corned beef<<

Langer's pastrami IS NOT corned beef.

I have actually been in the alley behind Langer's late at night and have seen them take the corned beef and paint them to look like pastrami.................

Are you saying that they were doing this to (illicitly) "sell" the corned beef as pastrami?

                        1. re: Servorg

Yes. Unknown fact there is a big double secret underground counterfeit pastrami ring in LA right under our noses. Illegal rye bread too.

I keep trying to smoke it, but I just can't keep the damn meat lit...

I wasn't going to mention it but I once saw a guy hunched in the corner of Langer's dotting a loaf of white bread with toothpicks tipped in caraway-colored paint.

Ah, sometimes I don't think I'm witty enough to post here.... ;)

To the OP, thanks for the heads up. Will be adding it to my list.... =)

I would agree with that too. I get it on toasted sourdough with mayo, onions and tomato served hot. Oh, and I ask for it sliced thick.

                        2. Pastrami is special sandwich on sale today for $7.50, a buck off.
