Does Kombucha necessarily have to have tea in it?

Can you make Kombucha practically out of anything that contains sugar, or is tea an essential element?

    1. Yes it does need tea - that's a critical component of what feed the kombucha starter.
you can find all sorts of information on fermentation and kombucha at the Wildfermentation.com website - even classes on how to make your own...Classes all over the country....

      1. No it doesn't need tea. I have made it in simple sugar water and it works well (though it doesn't have the same taste). A study has been made that showed caffeine content doesn't even decrease during the kombucha process. It doesn't use it. This myth and more myths about kombucha are analysed at http://www.phoenixhelix.com/2013/03/2...
