Bresca - Recent Suggestions
My wife and I are going to be up in Portland next weekend, and we have reservations at Bresca. It seems every time we've tried to eat there over the last few years they've been closed for one reason or another (renovations, night of the week, vacation). Is there anything on the menu that we should try?
Also, my wife is a little bit on the picky side. Do you think that will be a problem? The menu online was quite limited. Is that indicative of what we can expect? She loved her meal at 555 (tasting menu), somewhat enjoyed Fore Street (duck), and did not care for Street & Co (mussels marinara - to be honest, I didn't care for this place either). I contemplated Hugo's instead of Bresca, but I get the sense the food is a little too modern for her.
You have kind of answered your own questions . The thing to remember is Bresca is quite small and the menu is limted but everything I've ever had was excellent. Also enough choices that even a somewhat picky eater should be fine. Salads and deserts are mind blowing.i would stay with the plan!
I might suggest calling early in the week when they may be able to give you a good idea what may be on the menu. We had to pass one time as my SIL did not like any of the 3 entrees on the menu - fish, lamb and duck. There's usually a pasta as well and as great as the savory items are, as LeRique points out, the desserts really shine.
Hugo's is phenomenal but an un-adventurous eater might not fully appreciate the meal. You've done Fore St. already so the leaves about a half dozen other good choices. People have been talking up Back Bay Grill lately and although I haven't been for a couple years, I never ate anything there that wasn't excellent.
Bresca ended up being a solid meal. There were a couple minor misses, but all in all it was fun night.
Gorgonzola and chorizo stuffed dates - I found these a little too sweet. The saltiness of the chorizo didn't really come through
Shredded brussel sprouts - We loved this. Absolute perfection.
Hanger steak - my wife ordered it medium and it was served way under. In the medium/rare to rare range. That being said, the flavors were all really nice.
Duck - I ordered the duck medium rare at the chefs suggestion, but it was served a lot closer to medium. Again, the flavors were all really nice, though a tad on the sweet side.
Apple tarte tatin - What a wonderful dessert. I'm lactose intolerant so I had to tread lightly around the gelato, but this was a great way to end the meal.
