Dekopons -hot new citrus- do we have them yet?

Probably a week early but I'd like to try this cross between a Mandarin and an Orange as they sound pretty darn tasty: http://www.latimes.com/features/food/...

Give a shout out if you come across them, probably at a Whole Foods or Asian markets I'd think.

  1. I read about these too. I'm guessing not yet. Time to start harassing Urban Fare. sounds like something they would bring in.

    1. Found 'em! They sell under the name of Sumo Mandarins. Bought a few at the ex Capers on 4th (just can't get around to calling it Whole Foods....).

Although they may not be the second coming of the orange they're pretty tasty with an almost even split of orange and mandarin flavour with large somewhat firm sections (seedless of course).

Not being a regular eater of whole oranges, besides Mandarins at Christmas and the occasional Clementine, I'm curious as what serious citrus fans think.

Thanks for providing the common name. I'm pretty sure I saw sumos at one of the greengrocers on Broadway in Kits but of course I didn't make the connex so will be sure to pick some up and try 'em.

According to this article http://www.latimes.com/features/food/... they only came on the market last year and Sumo is their trademarked name.

      2. Not sure if they are recently available or if they have been there the whole time but I just bought some at Whole Foods in West Van and they were delicious.

They had them at the one on West 4th the other day.

And at the Whole Food on Robson (the old Capers)

        2. I see that the oh so delicious Sumos have arrived in local stores for their short run.... WTH on the price at Whole Foods/Capers? $4.00/lb.means the three oranges I bought were 9 bucks and change!

Hopefully that is going to drop in the next week or so.
They're large and hilariously gnarly looking like they were crossed with Ben Grimm/Thing DNA....

Funny I was just thinking about them yesterday.

They were so good last year but I remember I thought the price was sort of crazy. Did anyone notice if the price went down as the season wore on?
