What's the best Steakhouse int the PHX area?

I want to take my husband out to a Steakhouse for his birthday. Initially, I was thinking Ruth Chris's or Mortons. What's your thought on these two and any recommendations for your favorites?

  1. We still really like Ruth's Chris, but love Mastro's. This board is pretty well split between a lot of the steakhouses around town.

Try BLT. Make sure you arrive a bit early, preferably at Sunset, for a cocktail on the Patio. Very cool experience.

    2. There are countless steakhouses in the Phoenix area and I think it really depends on what part of town you're in and what you're looking for (price and setting-wise). If you're willing to drive and don't mind dropping some $ for his birthday, the resort steakhouses (J&G, Mina's place at the princess, BLT, etc) might be what fit you're looking for. Different restaurants also have their unique catch. For instance, Mastro's City Hall chars their steaks really heavily. The inside is still cooked to order, but there is a really crunchy charred crust on the entire thing which some people like (not me). Ruth's does that sizzling butter thing. Durant's and Stockyards have the old-school vibe, although Durant's is a little more formal. You might even consider Fogo de Chão - an AYCE Brazilian steakhouse. Nothing wrong with RC's, Mortons, or even Flemings and the Keg, but there are a lot of other choices out there.

      Mastro's City Hall Steakhouse
      6991 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85251

      Bourbon Steak
      7575 E. Princess Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85255

      J&G Steakhouse
6000 East Camelback Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85251

      BLT Steak
5402 East Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85253

      Fogo De Chao
6300 N Scottsdale Rd, Paradise Valley, AZ 85253

      1. definitely BLT or Mastros Cityhall

        1. The wife and I love Mastros Cityhall but it could get very loud if you're seated in the lounge area. We love the view at J&G but prefer the steaks at Mastros more.

          1. Thanks all! Mastros City Hall it is...I took him there once and he loved it so there it is! Thanks again.

            1. Two places. Shula's Steakhouse and the Stockyard.

              1. Of all of the "steakhouses" in PHX, I have had the best meals at Capital Grill, at the Biltmore mall. Though a mini-chain, they have come through, time after time.

Flemings has been good, though a level below.

With the exception of Durant's, the rest have left me asking "why?"

Aloha Bill..I'll be in PHX end of March...cocktails?
                  ; )

                  1. re: Beach Chick

We are doing some travel in March, so maybe, but then, maybe not - depends.

If possible, maybe we can do Durant's. Have not been in too long. Please e-mail me with dates, etc., and we will see what we can do.

Though things have changed fairly recently at Durant's, they still seem to do a great job. I will always recall when Ch. St. Jean's Cinq Cepages was Wine of the Year ('96 vintage?), and Durant's had it for US $ 55, until they ran out. Some well-known "steakhouses" had it for from US $ 450 to $ 1,000 per bottle, though it was released at about US $ 25 wholesale, before the award. I drank the last two bottles, that Durant's had, and the price NEVER went up. Their steaks have always been great, and with service to accommodate them.

Still, my best, recent PHX steakhouse dinners have been at the mini-chain, Capital Grill. The PHX location is better than the DC version, right between the Capital and the Whitehouse, IMHO.

                2. Oops, think that I have already mentioned Capital Grill and Durant's.

                  Sorry for that.
