Live seafood in the South Bay

zare_k Feb 13, 2012 10:53 PM

What is the best market for live seafood (crab in particular) in the South Bay? I usually go to 99 Ranch for this, but since I started working in Chula Vista it's not really convenient for me to get up there on a weeknight. Looking for someplace south of 8, and preferably closer to 5 or 805 rather than out in Bonita or Eastlake.

The new Seafood City on Orange (between Melrose and Max, on NW corner at 805) is a really nice market. No comparison to the Mira Mesa location.

Ummm, no comparison in what way? I go by the MM one all the time and I have been very nervous about buying seafood after a bad experience with crab from a local seafood market over New Years.

Sorry to not be clear. Both Seafood City locations have good selections of fresh seafood and produce.

The Chula Vista one is very new and modern, with larger and more areas of fish on ice in the open, larger cases of seafood-and meats, a large area with cooked items to go, the aisles seem wider and have an even better selection and the 'Food Court' area is inside the store (not out on the perimeter) with many, many benches and table seating spaces in a common area and not just with each business. When I went to "my"/"your" Seafood City in Mira Mesa, I was a little sad; it looked older and not as modern...

Thanks for the suggestion-- however, this market does not have live tanks.
