In Hilo there is Island Naturals Market & Deli or you can go to the Farmer's Market for fresh fruits/veggies.

In Honolulu we ate and shopped at Down to Earth several times, ate at Simple Joy and Peace Cafe, and got fruit at Ala Moana farmer's market.

On the Big Island we shopped and ate at Island Naturals, shopped at HIlo Farmer's Market, and ate at Cafe Ono when we went to Volcano.

Guys: what's the name of the veg. food store a few blocks east of Maharani? They might have something. Also, some Indian restaurants might too. Da Spot??

I think you mean Down To Earth. There is also Kokua Co-op a couple blocks east of that. Down to Earth does have a buffet line/restaurant section.

Hale restaurant down near the Keeamoku/Kapiolani Wal-Mart gets good reviews, and Loving Hut and Peace Cafe are also popular vegan/vegetarian restaurants. I don't know about the gluten free aspects, but I'm sure they have some.

Govinda's is a long time favorite, and Maharani which Joebob mentioned has some vegan dishes. I like the food at DaSpot, although i think they have tamed it a bit too much. Have to admit I've not tried any of their vegan/vegetarian dishes. Himalayan Kitchen does do vegetarian/vegan dishes as well, as do most Indian and Thai restaurants. For Thai i would consider Pae Thai, Chang Mai, and the old standard Keo's.

If you are stuck at Ala Moana Center at mealtime, aside from the above mentioned Hale a block away, Panya at the mauka parking lot side of the mall level doesn't specialize in vegan/vegetarian, but they do have some dishes that should be ok and are pretty flexible if you let them know your needs.

I think Hale Macrobiotic restaurant (if that's the one you are alluding to) has been closed for over 1 1/2 years already.

I guess I should mention that the owners of Hale & Kaiwa have a new place called Yuzu that opened up late last year in the Ala Moana Hotel. That might be another option. You can check out their menu at the following website: http://yuzuhawaii.com/
