San Diego Italian

I recommend BELLA ITALIA on Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach area of San Diego that just opened. They have another location I haven't tried; but other diners indicated it is very successful, thus another location was born. It truly is authentic Italian, as noted by a good percentage of Italian natives in attendance with Italian being spoken at some tables inside and out at the outdoor patio, and by the young owners and managers. Several visits made me a fan.
The Little Italy area of India St also is outstanding for great authentic Italian.
Both provide excellent food and service at a better price (and easier parking) than the Gaslamp District.

The best San Diego Italian I've had, and frankly one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever been to, is Via Italia Pizzaria in Clairmont. Don't let the name (or location) fool you: this is the real thing. The chef and owners are Italian, and the food is unbelievable. I usually am there with a fairly large group, and we just ask for chef's choice, which is always a tast of the best things on the menu that day, and some special surprises (like lamb cooked in parchment with fresh spinach).
