My favorite Mexican place, serving Apatzangan-style machaca with the best freshly made tortillas I've
ever tasted, unfortunately closed down a couple of years ago, and I haven't been able to track down the
chef.
There is an amazing Italian-American place called Lemucci's (unless it's Luigi's) that has been around
since 1903 or something and is actually far more old-fashioned than anything you'll find in NY or SF,
the utterly authentic food of Italian peasants suddenly transplanted to a land where olive oil is
considered exotic. A little bland, but definitely worth the trip. And for more bland authenticity in
antique surroundings, the Arizona (in the Basque district) has pretty remarkable 1930-style
Mexican-American food.
