what goes with cheese fondue?
am having a birthday party for my 10 year old centred around fondue (she feels v. grown up), want a nice first course to keep them sitting down longer. We'll be having bread, apples, veggies etc. as dippers so looking for something that is light and 'pretty' first...birthday cake for dessert of course! thanks...
This sounds like such a lovely party! I also thought of salad first, but knowing 10-yr-olds, maybe you could make it a small, do-it-yourself salad bar to add to lettuce with a few things that don't duplicate your fondue items, and a couple of dressing choices. You could add a shrimp or chicken "lollipop" if you wanted, marinating and threading on a bamboo skewer and cooking it on the grill or broiler to top the salad. The fondue will be really fun for the girls, so I personally wouldn't get too detailed over the first course. Happy Birthday to your mini relentlesscook!
if you want to keep a communal eat feeling going, you could do passed grilled vegetable platters, each one marinated in something slightly different along with a light chilled soup?
or very simple - prosciutto wrapped melon or asparagus
only thing regarding shrimp - even though your daughter feels grown up, just make sure the other kids are as interested in the finer foods :)
