Allen's steak festival

Anyone ever have a steak there?
I've only had negative experiences there, but I admit that their menu layout has piqued my interest.

Thought?

      second that!

The best part of reading an Allen's thread is due to the Chowhound feature that displays associated threads like these:

Allen's on Danforth - will never go back (64 replies)

Arrogance at Allen's on the Danforth (22 replies)

Allens on the Danforth- Disgusting food, service (39 replies)

Allens on Danforth - how do they draw the crowds? (31 replies)

But they must be doing something right as this one has 16 responses :-)

Great meal at Allen's on the Danforth (16 replies)

Now I can apply some "Zagat logic" (the type that ranks a burger place as 3rd best restaurant in TO):

        16 replies / 156 replies = 10,25% appoval rating for Allens!

There is no doubt that the hate is on for Allen's on this board. It has kept me from going mostly because "why risk it?" If I am not mistaken though, much of it is by the same group of people who just keep reminding us of how bad it is thread after thread. So if you boil it down, I wonder how many people there really are with this sentiment? On the other hand for me, I have had great patio experiences with their grill and tremendous burgers inside. I am there with my friends and the servers bring us great food. This has never failed me.

Believe me I do not doubt that the feelings on here are genuine and most are deserved. But over the years I see so many people on CH rule out a place because of one bad experience - even if it is just by a random turnstile server. Then they dig their heels in. This is not directed specifically at any individual in this thread as I really don't keep track. But I did want to bring to light for the many other readers of this thread that not all is bad at Allen's.

          FYI

I didn't get the same server each time we ate there. And I gave it around 15 tries in 10 years. I'd think that was more than enough to determine that had bad service and bad food.

This steak festival manu looks interesting, but I've had just too many bad visits to Allens to give it another try.

I've been there around 6 times over 11 years.
i recall walking out of there due to the horrible service at least once, if not twice.
i remember getting the stink eye from them because we came in for drinks and snacks and not a full-blown meal.
i've been there with my wife once or twice for dinner and posted on an old Allen's thread about it. Burger was not worth the hype and whatever else we ate was forgettable. the service and large-beer-list-without-having-any-of-the-beer-available was not. the staff's never known a thing about their beer available, so they can't advise if you want help making a decision.

i will say that my wife ate there once with a large group and liked what she had (may have been the burger). but i live a 20 minute walk from there and we never go back, so it says something.

i kind of want to give them the benefit of the doubt with the stead festival, since it looks pretty darn good. but i'm not in the mood to blow $150 for 2 to have meh steak and crappy service. hence, the original post.

              1. re: justsayn

I presume you have a point. personally though, I went there more than a few times back when good burgers were a rarity, and eventually stopped going because I could not take the horrible attitude of the servers anymore. and yes, servers, plural.

        2. Thanks for posting this! Looks awesome!

I have only been there maybe 6 times over the past few years and never had any issues so I guess I am lucky to be able to get excited over this!

          1. Never again. Not sure why people still love this place. Service is horrible,

            1. Went for drinks and dinner with old friends about 2 months ago. A bit overpriced, but the service was fine and they make a good burger.

The first time I went there they told me I wouldn't be served unless I took my hat off. I promptly left & never went back again.

                  baseball hat or top hat?

                    Flat cap.

              2. I'll be the dissenting voice to state I've never had bad service at Allen's. I go probably 6 times a year for the burger, nothing else. It's not an amazing burger, but a very solid one. I've always enjoyed it.

I haven't had the misfortune of picking out of stock beers either. Perhaps I've just been very lucky. I live on the west side, I don't trek over to the danforth for much, Allen's being probably the only thing.

Generally have never had a problem with Allen's but I only get the burger (med rare) and never go at peak time. Went once at peak time (Saturday night at 7:00) and waited over 40 mins for a takeout order. Only happened once but I avoid busy time if at all possible.

                2. Since nobody's actually talking about the steak, I'll pipe in. I have been during the steak festival once and it was excellent. The selection of cuts and producers is exceptional, and very exciting for a carnivore like me. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. There is a special addition to the all Canadian wine list during the festival, that provides the opportunity to try some very rare vintages of some of the best wines made in the country. I have also tried the steak a few times off the regular menu and they do a fine job with an expensive piece of meat.

                  1. Folks, if you've had experience with the steak festival at Allen's, please help out the original poster and report about it here. Discussing the merits of having steak in a restaurant are off topic for the Ontario board.

                    1. I've been to the steak festival twice and absolutely look forward to it. The steak selection is excellent as are the wines. As for service, I've had one horrendous experience there, years ago. I've been a couple of times in the past year and service was fine. Nothing exceptional, but decent enough.
