My favorite contemporary Californian restaurant the last couple of years is Gjelina, on the east side of Abbott Kinney a couple of blocks north of Venice. Much of the food comes from their woodburning oven: excellent thin-crust pizzas, wonderful vegetable dishes, unique salads, pastas and meat dishes. Nothing too expensive, everything served to share. Save room for the extraordinary butterscotch pot de creme for dessert. Try to seat on the small outdoor patio. Reservations essential.
