Queen Vic Pub - Excellent first impression
Very favorable first impression (that's not a phrase I often find myself typing these days about anywhere!) of the Queen Vic.
Good Guinness. interesting bar keeps, craft cocktails (including a Pimm's and a variety of custom bitters), boutique bourbon & rye collections, reasonable-ish wine list, eclectic tap beers (many TX brews --- unusual and fairly obscure but I think well kept - based on the Guinness and general appearance of other pours) and Portuguese/Indian style food with a few British standards thrown in.
Tasting some Indian appetizers I brought home: YES! they know what they are doing. This is Indian food with that "British-side-of-the-Pond" taste (much touted at the London Sizzler but I did not find this taste there: here it IS in evidence).
Chef/owner (female half of) Indian-British with the male spouse-owner Portuguese. I found this the best place in Houston have stumbled upon in a great while. Will return although a huge haul from where I live (70 miles each eay).
Directions: Kirby and Richmond, west on Richmond a very short distance on N side of Richmond.
Still tasting the food, in a good way.
Their shepherd's pie made with New Zealand lamb sounds enticing as do a couple of other touches. They do offer Ploughman's but with fruit and sweet side which is not really the true Ploughman's Style. That said I was told British cheese was featured along with US / local ones.
The space is well proportioned and TV's and music kept at a sensible and pretty discreet level.
This has instantly leapt into Red Lion League for me. Also maybe a little cheaper. The bar-tenders were interesting and interested in what they were doing which is good. And friendly whereas I have found the Red Lion clicque-ey and definitely not "chummy".
I think one should probably try the Indian dishes given the executive chef's background.
I'll return here for a follow-up and report further. Nice to be able to write something positive for a change(!!!)
