chef's tables?

Does anyone have any experience with or know of any chef's tables that are available to average Joe's like me? I have heard a bit about them, on a national basis, over the last few months, but haven't really ever heard much about them here. Not sure if that's because they are for friends only in Philly or if it's just not a part of the local dining culture.

Secondarily, are they any fun?

Last night we went to a Chef's table at Lacroix. It was a LOT of fun and we had 12 (+) incredible courses. The food was delicious and inventive. And the table is right in the kitchen. It was really cool to watch the chefs in action.

I'm jealous! What kind of event was this? And can I ask what the price was?

      thanks for the advice everyone.
I will try to rally the troops and give Under the Oak a try. Sounds fun!

I've been to TT and Under the Oak Cafe and both are great experiences. TT serves some of the best food you'll eat with a commensurate price tag. UOC is very good with some excellent dishes. Both have great service. UOC is more inclusive with interaction with the actual kitchen. Both are BYOB.

Two thoughts occur to me about chef's tables. Talula's Table in Kennett Square has a chef's table. I'm not sure whether it's by invitation only, or whether they use it as a way of accommodating additional customers, given the difficulty of booking their regular farmhouse table. It's certainly worth a call to find out, though.

The other thought I had is about a restaurant I've been to once -- at the chef's table -- and it was really wonderful and lots of fun. It's called Under the Oak Cafe and it's in Philly, very close to Cheltenham. All guests of the restaurant are invited to hang out the kitchen before their dinner with a glass of wine (it's BYO) and watch the chefs prepare the evening's offerings. There is one large table in the kitchen, separated from the cooking area by a low dividing wall. At that table, there's one party seated and it's a prix fixe menu. The other part of the restaurant has a few smaller tables. I'm doing an awful job of describing this place, so if you're interested, you should look through their website. http://undertheoakcafe.com/Farm%20Tab...

I have been trying to get a group together for Talula's for sometime now. Under the Oak Cafe looks like a fun experience. I like the idea of being able to watch the chef's prepare the food. I have it bookmarked.

Don't give up on TT -- it will definitely be worth the wait. In the meantime, Under the Oak is definitely worth a visit. Funny that it so rarely gets mentioned here on CH.

BTW, when I made my reservations at Talula's, I had no idea whether I'd be able to gather a minimum of 8 people (okay, 6, really because I knew my husband and I were definitely interested). As it turned out, we had 12, and could have easily had more if space had been available.
