Where to buy quality Vanilla Beans in bulk?

I bake from time to time and use vanilla beans often enough but the average bean costs a lot. $5-$8 per bean.

Is there is a good place to buy quality Vanilla beans in bulk from somewhere. Or not in bulk but cheaper than that. Please note that I'm not running a restaurant so I don't want to buy dozens or hundreds of beans :)

Any place in Manhattan, Outer boroughs or Jersey would do.

  1. Have you checked out the prices on Amazon? The cost per bean is signifcantly less than $5-$8

The short answer is: try Ebay and find a reputable seller.

      1. I buy high quality vanilla beans in bulk from saffron.com. Here's the link: http://saffron.com/
I use them to make homemade vanilla and they work exceptionally well. Gave homemade vanilla as Christmas gifts and everyone raved about it.

I also love this seller, flavorjam. And, based on the unnecessary price of $5-8/each, the OP can buy 1/4 lb of quality bean for the price of just two beans in NY.

BTW, vanilla beans keep forever if you treat them right!

Another viable option that sells by the bean...for far less than the OP was willing to pay.

        2. Penzey's

they used to have a shop in Grand Central, but they do mail order, and are re-opening a branch on LI. Also one in Summit NJ.

          1. I've bought excellent vanilla beans at Costco -- don't remember the price, but certainly cheaper than a lot of other sources.

            2. Vanilla Products USA on eBay is extremely reasonable.

After buying the pricey vanilla salt at The Meadow on Hudson Street, I have become mildly addicted. I would like to try to make my own. What is the difference between the various types of vanilla beans offered by the online sellers above? For instance, this site lists Tahitian, Mexican, unknown origin, etc:

The vanilla salt from The Meadow is excellent, by the way!
