Where to eat in Tlateloco?

  • 7

We'll be in Mexico City in early March and are extremely pleased to hear about the Dr Atl show in Tlateloco. Any suggestions for places to eat that are nearby? Street food, fondas, restaurants, doesn't matter as long as it is very good.

  1. Not far south of Tlatelolco is the marvelous neighborhood of Santa María la Ribera, with its Moorish kiosko, its Russian restaurant, and its almost-but-not-quite gentrification.

In Sta. María la Ribera, you'll find the pozole restaurant La Casa de Toño. The restaurant is in an old neighborhood house, done up just right for a happy crowd. It's not upscale, but it is certainly wonderful--it serves what I think is arguably the best pozole in the DF. Here's the website, with a map of how to get there. The easiest public transportation is a cab, but the next best is the MetroBus and a short walk.

Very helpful, thanks Cristina. Have you ever tried La Oveja Negra?

        We haven't--yet!

Usually when we look for barbacoa, we stay closer to home: La Hidalguense, at Campeche 155, Col. Roma. It's walking distance for us.

Do you order by weight at La Hidalguense? If so, how much would be about right for two, esp if not starving?

          1. re: Indigo

Half a kilo is a pound. A quarter kilo is half a pound. I would say, if you're not starving, a quarter divided between you. You can always order more!

We also like the carnitas joint on the corner by Mercado Medellín.

We should get together while you're here.

Now that would be a pleasure! We haven't got exact dates, etc. just yet, but soon.
