Rehoboth Winter Weekend

My wife and I spent last weekend at the Sands, and made the rounds of some of our local favorites, and a couple new spots.

Lunch Friday was our customary stop at Jimmys in Bridgeville. Ordered a house salad, crabcake sand, and 1/2 fried chicken meal intending to take a significant amount to go. The chicken was great, had limas and dumplings on the side, also very good, but lite on the dumplings. Their crabcakes are not very high end but always flavorful, and fried crispy. For 8 bucks I can't pass them up. Picked up a bag of chocolate chip cookies on our way out the door.

Friday night we ended up at Eden for the first time. Braised veal cheeks from heaven with mushrooms, followed by a braised rabbit ragut with pappardelle that was also very nicely done. The rabbit dish featured some lavender that worked nicely with the dish. I was concerned as floral, or sweet components in savory dishes usually aren't my thing. I'm absolutely blank on what my wife had, but she noted the charcuterie plate on a neighboring table and immediately petitioned to return for dinner the following night. Dessert was a shared "candy bar" sort of chocolate concoction that was multi textured, and an overall delight. Eden was impressive overall, the space is elegant and beautiful, and the waitstaff casual, but very knowledgable and professional. They know food.

Breakfast Saturday was spent at Robin Hood on Rehoboth Ave. I love this place, very old school diner, with friendly wait staff calling everyone hon. Pancakes and very good sausage for me, and an omelette for the Mrs.

We stumbled on a Grottos food court at one of the outlets on Coastal, and I insisted on stopping for a slice. Definitely not as good run through the thermo-conveyor apparatus as it would have been fresh out of the oven at one of their sit down locations, but it was ok. I like Grottos, and I don't care who knows it.

We initially intended to try the Henlopen Oyster House for dinner Saturday night, but when we drove by they were insanely busy. Rather than wait for a table we decided to try to get a table at Nage, which is our favorite restaurant ever. It was busy, but we were able to get a table immediatley. I started with a tuna crudo that was phenomenal, best quality tuna I've had in quite a long time, served with rice cracker crumble, sliced jalapenos, simple and elegant and very very good. The wife had a cheese plate. Nage always impresses me with their accompaniments, this time there was a wine poached pear half, honeyed cashews, and a date preserve in addition to the inevitable water crackers. Oh yeah, and there were very servicable selections of cheddar, chevre, and bleu. I had the pan roasted chicken as an entree. Initially I was concerned as it was served in a large bowl, and seemed rather soupy with the jus, but this thickened up nicely with the grits served with the bird resulting in a brilliant gravy, I'm assuming this was intentional, and it is a brilliant arrangement. Brussel sprouts and parsnips were also in attendance. The wifes pork was very good. For dessert we ordered the creme brulee, and red velvet cheesecake. The brulee was fine, but seemed a bit to warm as if it may have sat for a while before making it to the table. The cheesecake was pretty forgetable, and the only connection to a red velvet cake was the coloring.

Sunday morning we stopped at Cafe Afrazan. Remarkably good breakfast. My chorizo/goat cheese omelette was exceptional. Very good potatoes and their rustic bread was perfect. The wife had simple bacon and eggs. Great neighborhood spot, and at $8 bucks a plate a pretty amazing bargain. Can't wait to get back there for some tapas.

  1. I can't believe I've never been to the Bridgeville Jimmy's. I have had their delicious food at catered events though. By the way, Nage does amazing catering too.
    The bar at Henlopen City Oyster House is always packed no matter the day or time or season.
    I like Cafe Azafran too. Oh wow their coffee is good.

      Looking to do one of the cooking classes at Nage one of these days. The chef there mentioned in his blog recently working on getting his own place. http://thecombandwattle.com/

      Do you have any info on the Shorebreak Lodge? We considered it last weekend as we had a very good meal there in September. It was open, but looked kind of desolate.

        All I know about Shorebreak is what I learn from Rehoboth Foodie, laststandchili. Maybe this summer it'll take off after a bumpy start last year. Their menu is very fancy! I'll check it out soon. The food has got to be great with the Eden people in charge.

        This is Polar Bear Plunge weekend in Rehoboth. Grotto Pizza and Thrasher's will put all others to shame with the Polar Bears.

        The Nage classes would be wonderful. I have enjoyed the chef's demonstrations at our farmer's markets.
