You can't sit down at Num Pang, although their sandwiches are yummy. Sakagura is great but you often need a reservation at prime lunch times. The two Turkish places (Sip Sak, on 2nd/50th) and Bi Lokma (45/3rd, more downscale/crowded, with a few tables) are very good. Aburiya Kinnosuke is a good recommendation and is directly across the street from Bi Lokma, so you can check them both out. If both are too crowded and you are in a hurry, you can do the Comfort Diner also on that block, which has good grilled cheese, though the rest is standard diner fare.

I use to live right by the United Nations but, the place has changed in the last 7 years since I lived over there. I am assuming, you are taking the train into Penn Station, then taking the train across to Grand Central, and then walking to the United Nations.
Back when I was living there, there were not many options and the most of the ones I liked are now gone.
There is always the palm which is a great place. You have the original I think. You can get out of there fairly ok, if you keep it simple. Chopped salad and a parm or something.
You have Num Pang on 41st street
You have Soba Totto which is a nice spot for some noodles.
there are some turkish options
I don't know really, i am interested in hearing how the old stomping ground is doing though, i am sure it is just an extension of murray hill these days.
