Beurre Echire

Where can I find Echire butter? I used to see it at SLM but none of the cheese shops carry it any more. Even the place I first got it in Montreal (Atwater Market) no longer had it when I went back in October. I'm wondering if perhaps the authorities have clamped down on importing it??

I work for a distribution company in the GTA and we used to sell Echire and Isigny butters to places all over the city, however, over the past year our supplier who operates in Montreal decided to stop importing it from France due to the cost and the fact that it wasnt selling as well as expected. Now we aren't getting any at all :( I'm living off of the sample sized ones we amassed over the last period that we could get it. If anyone is still selling it, its definitely costing them an arm and a leg to get it here!

Yeah, they're paying 300% import duties on it! That's a lot higher than the duties on booze....

Olliffe still carries it.

I think Olliffe carried it last year (haven't looked recently). But they do carry some high fat creamy butters besides from Echire usually.

Also if you in NYC again get it from Fairway or Zabars much cheaper than Dean & Deluca.

It's not that it's illegal to import, it's the fact that import duties on foreign butter are around 300% (that's no typo, I did mean THREE HUNDRED PERCENT). Who wants to pay that?

If you want European or American butter, drive to Buffalo and stock up...

Well last time I was at Wegman's all they had was President butter, the rest was ordinary grocery store butter. No Echire. I saw Echire over the summer at Dean & Deluca in NY but I didn't bother thinking I could get it at SLM.
