Singapore - French bistro fare at La Maison Fatien

A little slice of France in the pseudo red-light, KTV club-lined Duxton Rd area. I used to remember a time when Duxton Rd was quiet and genteel, and members of Singapore's small French community used to trek all the way there to dine at L'Aigle D'Or in the Duxton Hotel. That was back in 1992, when L'Aigle D'Or's kitchen, helmed by Executive Chef Thierry Duflos, and fronted by the urbane maitre'd, Dominique Couture, set the benchmark for French fine-dining in Singapore. At one point, Duxton Hotel was even rated by Relais & Chateaux. But that was way back then. It hjas since been taken over by Malaysia's the Berjaya Group, and turned into a business hotel of sorts, whilst the former French fine-dining restaurant had undergone a couple of incarnations, mainly as Italian eateries which never quite reach the heights of the legendary L'Aigle D'Or, which had hosted guest superchefs like Michel Rostang. So, it was with more than a little excitement that I read about the opening of La Maison Fatien (was it end-Dec 2011?) on the very same street, albeit a few doors away, from the former Duxton Hotel.

My lunch today:
- Salad de Chevre Chaud (warm goat's cheese salad) - pretty pedestrian. Simple bistro fare.
- French onion soup (with Emmenthal cheese topping) - not the tastiest I;d had in Singapore. Boasting rights for that belonged to Vis-a-vis on Chun Tin Road.
- Boeuf Bourguignon, served with a side of potatoes puree. The beef was slow-cooked in red wine sauce with onions,, carrots and mushrooms. Taste was unremarkable - again, certainly not anywhere near the best I'd tasted in Singapore.

Overall, a nice little place to come for simple French bistro fare. Just don't expect any fireworks.

    1. Or you can try another new French place near there:- Brasserie Gavroche on Tras Street. That should be about 5 minutes walk from La Maison Fatien. I hear that the chef of Brasserie Gavroche was formerly from Brasserie Les Saveur in St Regis.

Interesting. Will do that the next time I'm back in Singappore.

P.S. - I do not have a good opinion of Brasserie Les Saveurs - or *any* eatery in St Regis Singapore, for that matter.

I much preferred Brasserie Gavroche over La Maison Fatien. The former has more finesse in their cooking methods and seemed more professional.
La Maison Fatien has cosier seating, but the food is simpler and doesn't have the depth of talent shown by Gavroche's chef.
