Note to the OP: it would be helpful to know if you seek composed plates at a restaurant or takeout at a bakery or a slice of pie/cake/etc at a diner/cafe. And also what time you want dessert--some of the great options mentioned close around 5-6pm.

Junior's!!!!!!!!! They have been around (Brooklyn) forever and make fabulous sundaes, cakes and are known for their excellent cheesecake. My favorite is the strawberry cheese pie!!

Rock center is only one avenue away from Times Square. I work in the area so I know the ropes a little.

        Financier - 47th btw 7th and 6th
        Bouchon Bakery - 49th btw 6th and 5th
Jacques Torres - underground in rock center
        Maison Du Chocolate - 48th btw 6th and 5th
        Minamoto Kitchoan - 48th btw 6th and 5th
along with a cupcake tourist trap that actually has decent desserts that aren't cupcakes - don’t shoot me - it rhymes with Bagnolia. 6th ave and 48th?

La Maison du Chocolat is great, probably the best truffles I've had in Manhattan (just a very slight edge over Kee's). But chocolate truffles are expensive!

The Cafe Zaiya upstairs in the Kinokuniya bookstore has a mid-sized but tempting selection of desserts (cake slices, mousses, pastries) and a nice view of Bryant Park. More on the casual side but a pleasant place to hang out.

I am a huge fan of Little Pie Company. It's on 43 and 9, and has some of the best pie on the planet. Order the sour cream apple walnut warmed up and topped with Bassett's ice cream for a real treat!
