Spending a week in LA and looking for dinning suggestions - with teenage kid
Hi guys
Am coming over to LA for a break and looking for suggestions where to eat.
Looking for a couple of cheaper options as well as a couple of must dos.
We will travelling by public transport so near to metros etc would be helpful.
Looking to vary each night so things like Ribs/Steaks, Mexican, Seafood, Italian, Chinese and a US diner.
We are staying at Ramada Convention centre, West Olympic Boulevard so a couple of decent options within walking distance would be good.
Any suggestions really appreciated.
You will be within easy walking distance of Langer's (8 AM to 4 PM Monday thru Saturday) - home to one of the (if not THE) best pastrami sandwich (or platter) in the US. Also near by is Mama's Hot Tamales Cafe. But the LA Red Line subway stop is right there too. And that gives you entree to some of the best food in the city...and if you then use the red line to access the Gold Line train you can hit up so many places it could easily keep you busy for the next 6 months. Downtown there is Rivera Restaurant for high end, inventive Latin dining and some great steak places like Nic & Steph's or the Palm or the Pacific Dining Car.
I do note however that you have received plenty of great suggestions prior to your LA visit without ever "following up" to report where you ate and how you liked the places. This site lives on having a two way street. People ask for recommendations and hounds provide them, abundantly. We would all hope to have that loop closed with a "post visit" report.

Pacific Dining Car is a must I think - thanks for the response

Pacific Dining is definitely not a must. Many better choices.

I really enjoy the PDC's breakfast steak and eggs offering (either filet or top sirloin) and it saves me a bundle (medium to large bundle at that) of money.

Mendocino Farms has some really great orginal sandwiches like their steak BLT. Two locations in downtown LA. Great Brazilian pot pie at Wood Spoon. A bit of a walk but some very good sausages at Wurstkuche and good pie just across at street from them at The Pie Hole. Just across the 101 Fwy in Chinatown is Phillippe's, home of the original french dip sandwich, a LA landmark since 1908. I like the lamb dip with their homemade hot mustard. Coffee was a nickel but just went up to 49 cents. Still a good deal. Grand Central Market has some great finds in all their stands including scallop tacos. And as Servog recommended Langer's Deli has some of the best Pastrami in the world. Worth the 5 minute trip on the Red Line Subway. Welcome to LA.
