valley gelato

  • a

Any gelato places of note in the Valley (specifically anywhere fr: Encino to Studio City)? Would love to find delicious gelato without having to drive over the hill. Thanks!

  1. I received a mailer recently about a new gelateria in the center at Ventura and Woodley (where the California Pizza Kitchen is). I haven't tried it and have not seen any posts about the place.

You can get good gelato a little further east at Monte Carlo Italian Market in Burbank (on Magnolia, east of Hollywood Way). And then you can do some grocery shopping!

There is a place called Aroma Cafe (I think that's the name), it's on Ventura, just west of Van Nuys Blvd on the North side of the street. It's next door to Spumoni and a Hollywood video, in Sherman Oaks. I don't know if it's great or not, I enjoyed it but it was the first time I'd had gelato.

I'm not gelato expert either (I prefer Ben and Jerry's myself), but I have had the gelato at Aroma several times, and each time it was excellent. Nice texture and flavors (but would love to see them get more selection beyond the 8-10 choices).

Archer - I think this place will fit the bill nicely for you, especially on such a nice day (you can sit inside, or outside on tables, or better yet, stroll down Ventura Blvd).

I agree, Aroma is fine--not the best in the county, but when you're creeping down Ventura Blvd. and it's 95 in the shade, it will do nicely.

Another possibility: The Victor Benes Bakery inside my neighborhood Gelson's (in Century City) now offers fresh gelato in 8-10 variable flavors. Some of the flavors I've tried (sour cherry, pink grapefruit) have been quite good, others more ordinary. I don't know if any of the Gelson's/Benes outlets in the Valley also have the gelato, but it might be worth a call.

      2. There used to be a place right on the corner of Platt and Victory in West Hills (NW Corner)same shopping center as Hwood video I think which was very good. Haven't been that way in 3 years so don't know if it's still there. Worth checking out if you're in the 'hood.

In Canoga Park, Pastries by Edie sells Gelato which is very good. On Sherman Way, southeast of Owensmouth. Also incredible french pastries and very, very good panini sandwiches as well :-)

          No, it's gone...

There is one, not sure of the name----Melt?...I think it's the same chain as in Glendale Galleria) in Northridge Mall, upper level near food court.

The gelateria in West Hills is gone; in its place - a Coffee Bean.

          2. Monte Carlo (or is it Pinocchio) Deli on Magnolia in Burbank has gelato. I've never tried it, so I can't vouch for it.
When I crave gelato, I head to Pasadena for Tutti Gelati.

I also recently noticed a place near Caioti Pizza Cafe at 4346 Tujunga Ave in Studio City. It looked like it might have been a gelato/coffee bar but it was closed the night we were at Caioti. Just slightly South of Moorpark on Tujunga on the East side of the street.
