Help!!! Does anyone know where to buy Saltpeter in the East Bay?

I would appreciate it if anybody could tell me where to buy Saltpeter. I found a recipe for Corned Beef that sounds delicious but needs Saltpeter to keep the meat pink and not grey. I live in Richmond and am looking for a place that is close. Does anybody kow of a place to buy it in the Berkeley area? Any input is appreciated.. Thanks!!!

      You may experience additional issue with Saltpeter since it is one third of the recipe for black powder and since 911 is virtually impossible to find/

    2. Check pharmacies--- I bought some at a Long's a few years back, so I assume you'd be able to find it somewhere. Better yet, the Berkeley Local Butcher has curing salt and will sell it by weight. If you buy it at a pharmacy, you're gonna have a large amount of unused saltpeter.

        Thanks for the responses.. I checked a couple of pharmacies and didn't have any luck. So I ended up going to The Local Butcher in Berkeley and picked up some Insta Cure #1 from them. It ended up being $7 for a quarter pound. I didn't count on Saltpeter being so elusive. I'll see how the recipe turns out with the Insta cure and maybe next time will order some Saltpeter off the internet beforehand. Thanks again for the Tip on where to find it!!!

          The 1/4 pound should lat for a while. Why when you have a good substitute(NaNO3) that virtually everyone else is using do you need KNO3?
