Kuala Lumpur - Cantonese Fine-dining at Lai Ching Yuen (荔晶园) Restaurant
Lai Ching Yuen, the Cantonese restaurant at KL's Grand Millennium Hotel, the 5-star flagship of the Millennium & Copthorne Group of Hotels in Malaysia, attracted some attention last year by becoming one of the restaurants which gave up their "halal" certification and started serving pork (another notable one was EEST in the Westin Kuala Lumpur).
Our dinner this evening consisted of:
- Spinach tofu with crabmeat: very subtly flavored, generous crabmeat, emerald-green tofu tasted surprisingly eggy;
- Mixed Cantonese-style roast meats consisting of roast pork (siu-yuk) which was crisp and very tasty - definitely one of the best I'd ever tasted in KL; caramelised pork (char-siu) which was also extremely well-done - the pork streaked with thin layers of melting-delicious fat; and roast duck, which was also one of the nest I'd tasted here in KL. Definitely a must-not-miss dish here at Lai Ching Yuen;
- Bittergourd with tofu skin and black beans - a light, slightly gingery and well-seasoned vegetable dish.
- KL-style fried Hokkien noodles - the piece de resistance - like all top restaurants, the version churned out here was scrumptious: fat, slippery yellow Hokkien noodles sitr-fried over high heat with lots of crisp, golden-fried lardons, fresh crunchy shrimps, slivers of fragrant pork and chewy curls of squid, all covered with black soysauce to give it the distinctive dark, glossy sheen. Absolutely delicious! Add a dollop of sambal (chilli paste) for that additional flavor kick. Oh my, I *really* need to start my diet soon!

Looks and sounds lovely. Aaahhh, yet more KL Hokkien mee pictures! :-( [while winking] That tofu dish is very intriguing, would love to taste it.
Eh, doesn't seem like all that much food, your dieting can wait. Besides, if you did do so, what would we do without your nice reports on fabulous food from here and there? :-)
BTW the position of the marker on the Google-derived map on this page is obviously incorrect. I've edited the Googlemap page and reported the problem, let's see what they do after their "verification" process.
