Where can I find just plain chicken stock?

No one seems to sell chicken stock or broth without several other ingredients. I'd rather not have to make it.

  1. Wolfgang Pucks all natural chicken stock is pretty good. Not sure if there are other ingredients.

    1. I'm curious as to what constitutes "several other ingredients." Kitchen Basics makes a decent stock (I buy the unsalted one). Ingredients in addition to chicken stock are chicken flavor, honey, vegetable stocks (carrot, onion, mushroom, celery), bay, thyme, pepper. Those certainly are "other ingredients," but nothing chemical or artificial, it would seem.

Dey Dey's Best Beef Ever, which sells its grass-fed beef and pasture-raised chickens at various farmers' markets, also sells frozen stock made from said chickens. I've never seen an ingredient list; however, having tried the product, I can't imagine that it contains anything other than chicken stock.

I guess different people would want that for different reasons but in my case I like to make frozen ice cube treats for my dog and I was looking for a broth to add for a little flavor but dogs can't have onions or mushrooms so I was hoping there was something out there that is prepackaged and made so I don't have to do it.

      2. Trader Joe's organic free range chicken broth is excellent, but I concur w/ Jack Flash. Even if you made your own, you'd have to use onions, celery and carrots plus seasoning, which is exactly what's in this carton.

        1. I'm wondering if anyone sells chicken stock without ANY other ingredients like onions, etc. -- just the water that's been boiled with chicken bones, nothing else?

All purposes chicken stock is supposed to have onion in it. If you have an allergy to it, you might consider looking for bone broth recipes. All commercial "stocks" tasty nasty and nothing like the real thing. If you are lucky they taste like brown and msg.

If you want something actually cooked by people, I noticed Lindy and Grundy now have homemade stock in the freezer case.

The Lindy and Grundy stock has onions. I know - I asked. I'm allergic.

I'll ask the folks at Dey Dey's what goes into their stock besides chicken and water. I have to assume that some combination of carrots, onion & celery is involved, but the flavor is pretty much pure chicken, and it is a very light-colored stock (indicating an absence of too many additional ingredients).

Imagine Foods Organic Low Sodium Chicken Stock has these ingredients. filtered water, organic chicken broth, natural flavors, organic evaporated cane juice, sea salt, organic chicken flavor, organic turmeric. It doesn't look like there is onion unless that is one of the "natural flavors"

              2. Confirmed: the chicken stock sold by Dey Dey's Best Beef Ever is precisely what you seek: chicken & water, that's all. No salt. No vegetables. Just pure, unadulterated chicken stock (made from pasture-raised chickens).

They appear at various area farmers' markets.

                1. Stock and Broth are not the same thing. Marcella Hazan's points this out in her cookbooks and goes on to say Broth is used in Italian cooking but Stock is not. If you ask for Stock you should expect to find "other ingredients" indeed you should be disappointed if you don't.

Sorry about posting this twice. I thought I didn't post it in the right spot the first time and that I could delete the last one but I guess I can't...but there you go :)

I'm actually severely allergic to onions and contacted Imagine about the ingredients in their chicken stock because I was thrilled to find one I could finally eat. Turns out the 'chicken broth' ingredient has onions. Asked them to please list all ingredients for consumers so we will know what we are consuming...

                    2. Smart Simple Gourmet makes a chicken broth that is only: pasture-raised chicken bones, water, apple cider vinegar.

It's quite velvety and can be doctored up quite easily. I used it to make an awesome chicken ramen broth...

                        1. I just came from Costco in Van Nuys. They sell it there. 6 32oz cartons per pkg. $9.99 per pkg. I did not look at the ingredient list.
