and for that matter, what's the best diner/coffee shop in the south bay (i.e. redondo beach, hermosa beach, manhattan beach, el segundo).

Ocean Diner is in Hermosa Beach. It has been an institution for over 20 years. They owner is passionate about sustainable and organic ingredients. He roasts his own coffee bean, imports pure maple syrup, and bakes all their amazing pastry's in house. The staff has been there just as long and I can't leave without giving half pf them an update on Mom, Dad and my sisters. All other suggestions have been good as well, but Ocean Diner is incredible, please try it.

Finding good, local diners has been an ongoing project with some of my buds beginning with our first drivers permits in high school and now spanning a few decades.

Among our faves:
Bob's Hawaiian Style - Gardena
Lighthouse Cafe - San Pedro
Malaga Cove Cafe - Palos Verdes Estates
Wendy's Place - El Segundo

I really like North End Cafe and Uncle Bill's Pancake House in Manhattan Beach and Martha's 22nd St Grill in Hermosa Beach. Uncle Bill's and Martha's both close by 2pm daily.

As it says on North End Cafe's web site "we are open till 9pm and sometimes later." Make sure you try their Kahlua Pig Monte Cristo Egg Rolls.

I remember they had "Belgian fries" but they weren't really belgian or very good. but their wide variety of coffees sound good as well as their sandwiches with creole mojo and doulbe cheese burgers.

Really good burgers at North End Cafe like their Donahue with brie, blue cheese, bacon, caramelized onion, horesradish, tomato. Also their John Henry patty melt with american cheese, grilled onion, pickle, creole mojo, on sourdough. Good Breakfast too like their Zachary breakfast sandwich with hard fried egg, brie, bacon, raspberry jam
