Langkawi Malaysian in San Mateo - RIP???

We were headed toward Langkawi Malaysian in San Mateo tonight and tried to call ahead. Phone is out of service. Web site redirects to GoDaddy.

Can anyone confirm whether this wonderfully authentic place, which was probably the best Malaysian in the Bay Area, is now defunct or not?

Yep Langkawi is gone which was a big surprise to us as well. They've been closed for several months now. Sadly our last visit was just average. Have you been to Shiok Singaporean Kitchen in Menlo Park? That's a pretty good place, although pricier and smaller portions, but good solid quality.

TW Bistro, a Taiwanese restaurant will take over the Langkawi location, but not sure when they will open. I'm guessing by the Chinese name that they might be aiming for a Liang's Village Cuisine style menu, and hopefully even better.

Yes, have been to Shiok. "Pretty good" is the operative description. We will go back, but the dishes did not have the same feel of authenticity (e.g. lots of shrimp paste where appropriate) that one had at Langkawi. I guess you need more customers for whom these tastes are native for a restaurant to survive. To get my shrimp paste kicks, we will have to head the long way out to Rose Garden Lao in San Pablo for their papaya salad, etc.

Keep us posted on TW Bistro -- maybe they will have oyster pancakes...

There's a place in Milpitas Square, in the back-left corner, that says "singapore / malasian". There's no real sign of that style of cooking there in yelp / google / whatnot. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

        Maybe New Penang Garden?

Found it by searching this site's Restaurant database. The one that Chow management wants to ditch, yes, that one.

This is super sad; they must also have horrible marketing/internet presence. I crave Malaysian food all the time, curious enough about food in the area, and I had never heard of the place until now.
