Had a fabulous meal at Simple Bistro the other night. No Winterlicious, just their usual a la carte menu, most of the items on which can be turned into a 3-course prix-fixe menu @ $40. I hadn't been there since Chef Matt Cowan took over the reins, and was delighted to find that the food was even better than ever before. Wonderful ingredients and playful (and successful!) use of accompaniments and textures. And there's a very talented saucier in that kitchen. Desserts, including a perfect sticky toffee pudding, were also amazing. Delightful service, too.

re: Charles Yu
There are 'at least 2' amuses - once I had 4. But literally they are a mouth (almost)ful.
I have no complaints about value overall. The meal is uneven (both in pacing and accomplishment) but there are enough highlights to bring me back.
On both visits there were substitutions (really strange, considering they post their menu daily) and, so far the desserts have been relatively weak - which is an issue as both menus have the same dessert.
Wine list is 'strange' - VERY small and changes on a whim. First time I had never had any of the selections (all available by glass) but both glasses I had were very well matched. Second time, I think only 1 wine was repeated, but I wasn't impressed with the choices (around 6 wines TOTAL on list).Textures are strong, plating is inconsistent, flavours are sometimes muddled - but the trout (in particular) was excellent both times (and is still on the menu). The 'potato' was also fantastic (three different textures of potao) - but has now disappeared.
Right now it's a 'glass half-full' (rather than half-empty) And the peaks are very high so I recommend. Certainly at that price point.

- 5th Elementt runs a dinner promotion of $22.95 for a 3 course meal.
- Ha Long Bay Bistro has a 3 course menu for $25.
- Ruby WatchCo - $49 for a 4 course meal, of which everyone has the same items.
- Midi Bistro - $33 for a 3 course prix fixe menu - choice of starter, main & dessert. (Though they are part of Winterlicious, it appears this runs outside of Winterlicious.) -
Mandalay has an unusual prix fixe that includes a choice of four appetizers, dessert and coffee for $10 plus the price of any entree on their regular menu. There are 6 mains at $14.95, and several more under $20. This restaurant at Lawrence and Markham Rd. has been one of the good ones in Scarborough for many years.
There's also a $15 coupon on their website for the regular menu until February 13.

Though their website doesnt indicate, Elle M'a Dit tweeted their prix fixe to be, "Starting from Jan 26th. 3course Prix Fixe Lunch $17, Dinner $28! until Feb 10th."

Pan on Danforth Ave has been running a 3 plat prixe fix $25 dinner for a long time that is quite good and a great deal, but rarely mentioned here. Maybe that's because there's no buttermilk foam or molecular gastronomy involved. http://www.panonthedanforth.com/menu_...
And it's available every day.
