Local food recommendations

I'll be going to New Orleans in early Feb. looking for recommendations for lunch and dinners with good local food. I will have a car so outside of New Orleans would be fine, what should I try as a first time visitor?

  1. What do you consider as "local?"

    The reason that I ask is that NOLA cuisine is a real amalgam of many cultures, from French, to Spanish, to Caribbean to Cajun, with some Italian, plus a few others. "Local" to me, might well differ with "local" to many others.

    Also, do you have a budget range?

      Looking for crayfish, hush puppies, étouffée anything you would recommend trying.

          I love the etouffee at Gallatoire's. Bon Ton is the place known for etouffee but I thought their's was not good at all. Bon Ton did have some excellent fried crawfish tails. Atchafalaya Cafe has some great dishes - boudin stuffed quail, crawfish rice (it's a special on some nights) and I enjoyed it on my first visit in December.

      1. agreed - read the sticky. If you are staying in the FQ, here is a list of restaurants in that neighborhood. There are hundreds of restaurants so parameters are needed to answer your question. Quarter
