looking for current BASHO reviews...
I've read a few threads on here from previous chowhounds about BASHO...but it seems as if there most recent "reviews" were questionable or slightly bias? ...like an issue with drink orders using an internet dinning coupon...or service is lacking...
i see its been open since 2010 ...two years later...have they worked the kinks out? looking to eat there for the first time relatively soon b/c I will be in that specific area and from what i've gathered...the food and sushi is fresh??... i realize its not traditional Japanese b/c there is a modern take on it etc
Anyone been there in the recent to comment...or to share their experience?
Eat drink and be merry, Cheers!

Were back there last night -- they are doing a major renovation. Bar area is shut down and boarded up, but dining area is still the same. Food is still extremely good, we've bumped it up ahead of Fugyaku (but behind Ch. Hill Oishi) on our list. Very inventive, good response to our request for no avocado, and the prices seem to have settled in a somewhat reasonable level.

I've been to Basho 3 times, every time with a groupon type deal. I always present my groupon before the meal as groupon rules suggest. 95% of the time I feel my food is unaffected and the service is actually good. They still want you to tip well and come back...remember that.
I really like Basho and have enjoyed my meal every time there. The sushi is just pretty good. Their rolls are pretty for sure, but I haven't had rolls where the fish really stands out. Last time I was there I had some really good escolar sashimi. The sushi is very pricey as are a lot of other dishes. I absolutely love their steamed pork bun sandwich app (one of my favorite dishes at any restaurant), they use kurobuta pork which is ridiculously tender and melts in your mouth. You should go just for this app. Really enjoyed their seafood and seaweed salads as well as their hot roasted eggplant app. Miso yaki dinner is good but overpriced. I tend to like their non sushi menu items better here especially considering how expensive the sushi is here. I do think it is slightly overpriced for the food but then again I am a cheapo. GO, but don't order all sushi!

Sounds like I am in the minority but I think Basho has pretty decent sushi (perhaps of note is the fact that my order is generally split between nigiri and maki and doesn't stray far beyond tuna, salmon, yellowtail etc.). Certainly not o ya or Oishii quality but I put it in the same tier as its sister restaurant Duozo or even Oga's in Natick with places like Fugakyu a notch below. The reason I often tend to go somewhere other than Basho for sushi is because the parking is awful in that area especially, of course, 81 days a year between April and October and I am a sucker for on street parking whenever remotely possible.

re: Gordough
i agree parking in that area is horrific, esp. during Red sox nation invasions....but i did see they validate parking in the garage on the corner of Boylston/Jersey which is convenient...if street parking isn;t an option...i guess the only real way is to go there and lend myself to the experience that Basho offers...perhaps if expectations are set lower...i wont be so shocked?

I have been there recently, albeit with a Groupon, but I like to think that the quality of food served to me did not decrease once I disclosed the coupon. I was not impressed with the sushi or regular menu at all, and would not go back, as I think the quality could be far better for the price. I also think that they are trying to be inventive, but what arrives on your plate is far from. My girlfriend's wine glass arrived with a white etched line in it that I assume instructs the bartender where to fill up to. Are they really that cheap that they have to buy wine glasses with fill lines?
After I went, Basho was identified by the Boston Globe as one of the area's guilty restaurants for seafood mislabeling. I try my best not to support business practices such as this, so with this in mind, I will most certainly not return.
I live in the area, and passed by last Friday night around 6PM. There was a couple at the bar and only one table with patrons, as far as I could see. I'm not sure exactly what to make of this, but I am fairly certain that it is not a good sign...

re: barleywino
to be honest...an actual serving of wine is really only supposed to be like 4oz ...so i dont think that is distasteful/cheap on behalf of the restaurant, its the same concept as mixed beverages need to be measured out etc....its all us winos that think we are getting ripped off b/c we pour our own big gulp! :P

re: northshoregrl
If ensuring a perfect pour is important to them, they could measure it and then pour it into an unmarked glass. Or, they could have their bartenders practice pouring the amount they want. After enough practice, they will come within a reasonable margin of error. In either case, customers wouldn't know the difference beyond not having an annoying line on the glass.

re: chrisdapos
I've only used an Eversave coupon, I had one for The Fireplace in Brookline. I don't recall it saying to give it at the beginning. I don't remember mentioning it before we got the bill. I do know that it said you should tip on what the amount of your bill would be without the coupon. I do that whenever I have a gift card. I appreciate that some may not know that.
