dcvino1972 Jan 16, 2012 05:07 PM

I am trying to make a recipe for the book "Plenty" and the ingredient list calls for

Kecap Manis (Sweet Soy Sauce)
Light Soy Sauce

Does anyone know where you can buy these in DC?

A popular is ABC brand sweet soy sauce (Kecap Manis) from PT Heinz Indonesia. You can find it in mostly Asian grocery store in MD,VA area. As for light soy sauce, there are so many brands available in American grocery store. All I remember regarding DC specialty grocery is in Chinatown but not sure if it still exists.

I've bought thin soy sauce, which I use for light soy sauce and black soy sauce (which is thick and sweetened with molasses) at the Chinese pharmacy next to the abandoned CVS on 7th Street NW, between H and I NW I think. Very convenient. They have a ton of Chinese dry goods. They like to take cash only for the food.

I don't think you can find Kecap Manis in DC - if you leave the city you can find it at most H Marts, Grand Marts and the Mom and Pop shops in Eden Center (Va) and chinese markets in Rockville. Maxim's is within walking distance of the Rockville metro.
