Gluten-Free BBQ in Houston?
I'm new to Houston, but my in-laws are in town for a conference, and we want to take them out to BBQ. Unfortunately, they are celiacs, so I need to find a place with a gluten-free sauce. A quick search on Urbanspoon tells me the only place with a gluten-free BBQ menu anywhere close to us or them is Goode Company. I've heard some pretty so-so things about Goode Company, so I'm looking for other suggestions; any recommendations near the Upper Kirby/Greenway Plaza area (where we live), IAH (where my in-laws are staying), or somewhere in the middle?
My sister also has celiac. I don't have a specific place to recommend, but we have found that most of the smaller, non-chain BBQ places that do their own cooking are fine. You can call them and ask what's in their rub. The main thing to watch out for is whether they use big bottles of spice mixes (instead of individual spices) because those sometimes have modified food starch as a filler. Modified food starch is one of the things that may (or may not) be a problem, but doesn't have to be defined by law. Also, if they use soy sauce, it is generally a wheat product. Places that do a fairly plain rub, and just count on the smoke for flavor will be fine.
Thanks for the suggestions on what to look out for. Anyone have any specific recommendations of places, though--either places that are sensitive to GF issues or places that focus on the smoke for flavor, as opposed to the rub? Best areas would be Northside Village, the Heights, 5th Ward, downtown, Montrose, River Oaks, Upper Kirby, or somewhere along the 59 (until it crosses the 610).
