Planning event - cater in or private room out? help with ideas please

Hey all, I'm helping plan an event for about 25-50 people in a few months. My apartment building has a private room that I can rent for $500. Then the plan would be to bring in a mix of some cheap good food and beer, initial thoughts:
- empanada's from empanada mama
- buns from baohaus
- daisy mays bbq

If you have any other ideas for moderately priced, good food that could easily be catered to an event like this, please let me know.

The other option would be to reserve a space at a restaurant. Want tasty food and cost is a concern. Wouldn't want to spend more than the room rental + food above, so maybe under $1000? I'm sure it's hard to say with the # of people up in the air, but if you have some ideas that you think may work please let me know.

  1. As I have recommended in the past. The Varick Room at Tribeca Cinemas is a great place for an event. They have a nice bar, they use several caterers you can choose, or bring your own food. If you want to see a film, you can add that, as they have 2 screening rooms. Many celebs have had parties there, as well as major corporations, and just regular people too. Mario Batali did some children event parties there. I've seen weddings posted on the marquis in front. So your event name can be on the Marquis. Definitely the place to have an event.

    1. Steamed buns usually don't keep well at all, I'd avoid BaoHaus for this. Over time, buns get either soggy or stiff as they cool.

thanks kathryn - that's a good pint. think we will eliminate the buns. if anyone new reads this. leaning towards the cater in option

call the Varick room, if they are not all booked up, they might swing a good deal for you . They have great catering, or allow you to supply your own catering. They have a bar that you can either pay a price and it's open bar or have a cash bar where people buy their own drinks.
City Winery is another option but will cost you more. Cinque has a back room that fits about 25 people, but the Varick room fits like 300 and it would be all yours no shared space

          City Winery
155 Varick Street, New York, NY 10013

          Trattoria Cinque
363 Greenwich Street, New York, NY 10013

I'll check with them, but sounds like it will be too much $. this is going to be a low key get together for my wife's baby shower (don't think I mentioned that before)
