Bar César - Oakland

Robert Lauriston Jan 15, 2012 02:37 PM

The menu's reportedly in flux and there's been at least a partial change in ownership (again), so I guess past reviews are out of date.

Went yesterday afternoon for drinks to enjoy sitting outside. Mojitos ($6.50 at happy hour) were excellent, very dry, tart and refreshing.

The menu's still mostly Mexican, but one of the day's specials was, incongruously, New England-style clam chowder. It was delicious, as good as I've had around here: cream, lots of red bell pepper, very little potato.

i'm such a coherence-junky, that (New England Clam Chowder @ Bar Cesar) makes me nuts.

But trying to put that aside: what was the clam story (i.e., kind of clams--you lead with cream, which makes me wonder: more creamy than clammy)?

Lots of clams, good clam flavor with a good red pepper accent.

I tried out their happy hour several weeks ago. Oysters were $1.75 apiece instead of the $1.00 the website lists them at. Overall experience was average. No plans to return.

Oysters (chef's choice) is the first item on the happy hour menu.

Huh, I guess I misread. The Web site's out of date.

I did. The photo is of Sunday's menu. The Web site's out of date, oysters are now $1.75, fish tacos are $6, no happy hour price on Tecate.
