local dungeness crab season almost over?

I was so disappointed to see the current price at 99 Ranch Market (Richmond) this morning -- $6.99 a pound. Nonetheless, I came home with 2 very big and frisky crabs for tonite's celebration.

Is this the end of the season? or just a momentary setback in supply?

Anecdotally, I think the higher prices are upon us for good. The easy days of $3.00-4.00/lb seem to be gone. And last weekend there were none to be had at any price at Monterey Fish or from the Emeryville dock. I had heard from a boating friend at the start that the crabs had thinner shells, not as many at legal size, and that they predicted a not so great season, which may be one reason the local guys didn't mind spending extra time hashing out the wholesale price.

Monterey Fish had lots on Tuesday: 6.99 cooked, 5.99 live. I got a 2 lb one, cooked. Not cheap, but very, very good.

Small season. Supplies started to decline before Christmas.
