  1. Max's Allegheny Tavern

    1. Max's is good, but my new favorite place is the James Street Gastro Pub and Speakeasy. You can see it here: http://burghfeeding.blogspot.com/

Both places quite close and an easy walk in the daytime.

      1. Nicky's Thai kitchen on Western ave. You can have the BEST shrimp and grits or waffles and chicken at Carmi's also on Western. lLegends is very good, across the street from AGH. bistro to go and Bistro Soul are both very good, on E. Ohio Street

Thanks so much for all the tips!

        2. I'll agree with all those that have suggested Max's Allegheny Tavern and Legends. Both are very good and worth your time.

Max's Allegheny Tavern is an old-school German restaurant. I think they make the best German food in and around Pittsburgh. Their reuben is also one of my favorites around Pittsburgh. Their fries are also very good. Amongst the German fare, I really enjoy their schnitzels, the pork loin, sausage, sauerbraten, spatzle, potato salad and sauerkraut. The sausage appetizer and soft pretzels are very good, too. Plus, there are always a few German beers on tap.

Legends, on the other hand, is a quaint Italian joint. Keep in mind that it is BYOB with a modest corkage fee (which, I think, is waived on Wednesdays). I often go with one of the specials, which have all been very good; however, spaghetti and meatballs with the house gravy and the gnocchi are good, as well. I'm also not sure the last time I've been there that I haven't started with the Roma flatbread.

James Street Gastro Pub and Speakeasy has caught my eye, but I have yet to check it out.
