Great seafood restaurant in sf

need recommendations for a good seafood restaurant in sf for next week!

      Non-Asian, no price range. Something accessible for my 60-something dad

        If he's not adventurous, Hayes Street Grill. If he is, maybe La Mar or La Costanera.

      1. I suggest going to the upper right-hand corner of this page and doing a search for "sea food." You will find a good number of past discussions with many, many helpful suggestions.

        The Tadich Grill and Sam's Grill are two of the "old-school" seafood places in SF and, as a 60-something myself, I think you Dad would enjoy them both!

            I like Scoma's for lunch.

            Is this lunch or dinner. What does accessible mean? Does he have mobility problems or is he just partial to a certain type of restaurant.

            There is a wide range of suggestions here and 60 can mean a lot of things. I wouldn't send a hip active 60 year old to Scomas, Tadich or Sam. I wouldn't send a more grandfatherly type to Hog island and have him perch on a stool not to mention there really isn't easy access to the Ferry Building if mobility is an issue.

            How upscale or low scale do you want? What kind of seafood does your dad like?

              I probably wouldn't send anyone to Hog Island in the Ferry Building regardless of age. They have good oysters and nice views of the Bay, but other than that:
              Very limited menu options.
              Anti-loitering chairs.
              No full bar.
              Crappy selection of beers.
              Pretty limited hours.
              Not cheap by any standards.

              For oysters with a view of the Bay, I'd much rather go to Waterbar. The full price oysters are as good as at Hog Island, but the menu options, ambience, and amenities are much better.

              BTW, speaking of Scoma's, did anyone notice that they seem confused about whether they accept reservations. Their mobile browser website says

              "Call today to make your reservation at a San Francisco Institution!"

              Their desktop browser website, on the other hand, says:

              Well, at least one of the two sites probably has got it right.

                I wouldnt say hog islands beer list is crappy, but it is limited since they have only 4 taps and no bottles. However, i know i can always find at least one respectable beer on their list. Unless you consider racer 5, trumer pils or pranqster crappy beers. It aint monks kettle, but its not crappy either. Plus they pour at the proper temperature, which is more than often not the case in restaurants. No full bar is no big deal to me, i'm not necessarily there to have a cocktail. Menu is limited too, but pretty decent, and i think fair value under the circumstances.

                  The word "crappy" was meant as a description of the size of their beer list, not of the individual brews on their list. Having a handful of beers on the list pales in comparison to a lot of other places that also serve oysters including Bar Crudo whose selection is probably about ten times larger.

                    Bar crudo is one of my favorites, but they dont have 40 taps. I give hog island credit for not bowing to truly crappy beers on their limited list. No heineken, stella or coors in sight. They could have more bottles but dont have the space. Quality means more than quantity, though, and hog island has decent quality. Definitely not crappy.

                      Hog Island may be doing the best they can, but it's still a very limited selection. Had they had at least a dozen to chose from, I wouldn't have complained even if it had included a couple of not-so-great ones. There are people out there who like to have the option to order a Bud or a Coors Light.

                Ouch! In the eternal words of Tower of Power, "what is hip?" Is Anthony Bourdain hip?

                I have lived in San Francisco for almost 40 years. At the very least, I think I could pass whatever standard you have for being "hip" and "active." I have taken a number of people, of all ages and all levels of hipness, to both Tadich and Sam's over the years and they have all enjoyed it.

                  Just trying to determine if for the dad if 60 is the old 60 or 60 is the old 40.

                  just watched Sam's get trashed on Check Please by some people under 40. However, to be fair, they were both into spicy cuisine and Sams seemed bland and overpriced to them.

                  Someone who is a George Cluny 60 (yes i know he is only 50), might be more interested in an Anchor and Hope rather than Tadich ... though i'm sure George would have a good time no matter where he ate.

            2. I like Hog Island in the Ferry Building, especially if he's fond of oysters. They make a very good chowder and the seafood gumbo I had there last week was really tasty.Plus the Ferry Building is fun. For something a little more adventurous, try Bar Crudo.

              1. Another way of looking for the right resto:
                Perbacco has the most amazing scallop preparations, and always has a fish platter that varies by season.

                1. Hayes Street Grill is nothing special.

                  Waterbar and Tadich Grill will give you two "only in San Francisco" experiences - one modern with a view of the Bay Bridge, the other old fashioned in the best possible sense of that term.

                  If you go to Tadich Grill, get there early and be willing to sit at the counter. Even if the restaurant is crowded at the entrance, walk to the back and you may find empty counter seats. For some reason I will never understand, people stand and wait for a long time for a table when there are counter seats immediately available. The food is the same and it is easier to talk to someone who is sitting right next to you.

                  Anchor Oyster Bar in the Castro is always good, but get there when they first open as they are packed every night.

                  For seafood for breakfast, the crab benedict at Mama's on Washington Square Park in North Beach is amazing, worth a special trip, and worth getting up early for. Hate to sound like a broken record, but (wait for it) get there when they first open for breakfast or don't go. Even on weekdays there can be a line. If your Dad is an early riser - or will be on East Coast time - take advantage of this.
