Good Mexican - Downtown and Uptown

HelloBeautiful Jan 10, 2012 10:22 AM

Hi All,

It's my SO's birthday on Friday and I'm looking for a Mexican restaurant that has good food and a casual, fun atmosphere. I know NOTHING about Mexican food so would appreciate anything anyone can tell me. Ideally I'd like to be downtown or uptown, around Yonge and Eglinton. I've heard of a few places, Milagro, Hernando's Hideaway and Mariachi's... Anyone know anything about these places?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

MIlagro would be your best bet. There is one at Yonge and Lawrence and two downtown: one on Queen West and one on Mercer St.

I'm going to try Milagro on Mercer... Any recommendations on what we should try?

The ceviches are very good, as are most of the apps (botanas on the menu). I actually preferring ordering a bunch of those to share, rather than going with the mains. But I do really like the cochinita pibil. Pass on the barbacoa. Make sure you ask them for some of their salsas on the side, regardless of what you order.

For drinks, their sangria is decent, though certainly not the best I've had. If you like tequila, I think they have a good tequila menu. And hey, you can't ever go wrong margaritas and guacamole.

Wanted to revive this as I am going to be going in April.
Any other recommendations on what to get and what to avoid?

Check out "La Revolucion" near Keele & Dundas West. Tasty, well priced, all round good Mexican eats

Mariachi's is OK. I've never been for dinner though. My Mexican co-worker likes it too.

I like Mariachis and go there now and then. I'd say the portions are a bit smaller than some other Mexican places. I think the food at Fridas is better overall. In my inexpert view, Fridas has more non-Mexican food (like a fillet of halibut) done a la Mexcian while Mariachis is more purely Mexican traditional.

            What about Frida's on Eglinton?

We ended up at Milagro's on Mercer... Food was tasty but service was so-so. After our server quality checked our meals we didn't see him again until we eventually hunted him down for our bill! I had the enchiladas and my SO had the beef and bacon tacos... Both had good flavour and were a good portion size!
