Birthday dinner -white truffles!

1pm in the afternoon and I wasn’t sure what I was going to do for his birthday. G’s birthday always gives me grief because of its proximity to the end of the year holidays – Thanksgiving, Christmas and then New Years. It usually feels like a sucker punch of planning.
Yesterday at 1pm wasn’t sure what I was going to do for the celebration that evening. When I went out to pick up his gift, I stopped in at Citarella’s on Broadway in the upper west side. I’d been meaning to check it out but always put it off because there were other options closer. They had an enticing sign offering white truffles. That was the inspiration for the meal. I walked in and fell in love.
Artisan breads greet you in a corner as you walk in. Pre-cooked entre’s and sides in the next counter. Fish counter in the back. I picked up a gorgeous halibut steak that the fish monger de-boned. While standing in line for the fish I got some cooking ideas from a fellow customer who was in search of squid ink. Apparently Citarella’s has stopped selling squid ink, but I can get it frozen (the best according to my new friend) at Buono Italia (http://newyork.nearsay.com/nyc/chelse...) in the Chelsea Market – love that place. The fish monger gave me some wonderful suggestions for cooking the halibut steak – 5 minutes pan sautéed on each side. A little rosemary, cilantro, lemon, vermouth(we were out of vermouth so used a bit of white wine and gin) ginger and that was it.
Upstairs they have the deli section and that’s where the truffles are. White go for $350 a pound and black a bit less. I splurged on one small one that was $50. Spinach linguine, a light cream/cheese sauce and truffles grated over the top. spectacular!
So himself gets home – I’ve got everything ready to go and we spend the evening cooking, drinking wine, eating incredible foods. Huge success and a wonderful time.
