Burger Tap and Shake - Washington Circle, DC
I had a chance to check this place out the other day. Since a cheeseburger and a milkshake is probably going to be my request for a last meal, if I ever have to make that choice, there really can't be too many high-end burger places around here to suit me. I'll try anything that comes down the pike with gusto.
We got here about 6:45 on Sat. night. We had to wait for a table , but only a couple of minutes.
We got two burgers to share, the Tejas and the Southern Comfort.
TEJAS
Texas Chili con Carne (No Beans), Grated Cheddar
Cheese, Diced Onions, Pickled Jalapenos
SOUTHERN COMFORT
Pimento cheese, Fried Green Tomato,
Vidalia Onions, Bread & Butter Pickle
I preferred the Tejas. The toppings were excellent, but rather sparse. I was expecting it to be sloppy with chili - that wasn't the case at all. I loved the bun (I think the bun is crucial to a good burger). It was smaller than I expected for the $8 price - but, it was really delicious. The Southern Comfort was good, but again, the toppings were sparse - there wasn't a lot on there to really distinguish it. The other burger they had on the menu that I'd love to try is the Apache Sweat Lodge.

I especially loved the Apocalypto - that combination of ingredients really does it for me. It was on the thin side - easily sipped through a straw. My problem with it was the same problem I always have with alcoholic shakes. I can't really taste the alcohol and I get no effect whatsoever from drinking one. If I can't tell I have had an alcoholic drink, there doesn't seem to be much point in paying for the alcohol. Delicious as it was, next time I'll get a regular shake.
So, about $35 for two burgers and two shakes. Sigh.
We didn't try the fries or onion rings, but given the very manageable size of the burgers, it seems reasonable for two people to share fries.
The people who work there were very nice and helpful to newcomers.

Have you tried Lindy's Red Lion in the same neighborhood? Been there for years.

No I haven't -- I'll have to put it on my list. I might even try it tonight, as I'll be back in that neighborhood with a friend.

Ask for medium rare
The Robert is a classic, A-1 and sauteed mushrooms
The Carnegie is big (corned beef and sauerkraut)
Pearl Harbor - soy sauce- grilled pineapple, ham is exotic.

I ate there a couple weeks ago and came away with the impression that it was solid, but nothing special. I ordered the Apache Sweat Lodge and fries and ordered the Big Daddy for my gf. My burger was ok, but I had higher hopes for the patty - it almost tasted like a pretty good "puck" burger. It failed to bring any heat either. My gf's burger was solid as well, but the bacon was very thick (a good thing), but very fatty as well (more a problem for her than me). I liked the fries though. And the BTS shake (complete over indulgence) was good, but I tasted mostly butterfingers.
All in all, a solid burger place, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. I'd still opt for Ray's Hell Burger - even though the last visit there our burgers weren't up to par and they literally messed up my order 4 times (was still wrong after the last "correction" but I had had enough and was hungry).
