calzone barese
can anyone tell me if they know of a deli or restaurant in nyc boros or long island that makes calzone barese?(calzone or pie with anchovies, onions, and olives) not sure what other ingredients are in it. My grandmother used to make it for my father when he was a kid. thanks

I just made one the other day, and I've been making these since I was a teen. In all my years, the only place that I've seen (or more like, discussed) this creation is at Lorusso Pizza & Focaccia in Astoria. If you ask him nicely, he will make one "special" for you. If you speak Barese, then it will be a REALLY nice (and special) one I'm sure! He's from Puglia. He makes calzone Barese for his family all the time. I think he is from a town that starts with the letter "T" ... maybe Turi, Triggiano, or Terlizzi perhaps. Also, try the taralli he has packaged there at the store -- they're all made in-house. Excellent.

re: Cheese Boy
While not exactly what you're looking for, it sounds a little bit like the "Siciliana" at Cafe Catania in Brooklyn Heights. From its menu:
Siciliana, Fried Calzone with anchovies, scallions, olives and perocino
I've had it before and it's fishy and quite tasty.
