65th Birthday - LI
I've been tasked with planning a 65th birthday dinner in a couple of months for 12-15 people, including three kids under the age of 12. I'm out-of-state and not in touch with where to start looking. We will be congregating in Melville, but do not need to be limited to the area. Places where similar family gatherings have occurred are La Parma III and Mac's Steakhouse in Huntington Village. Not looking for anything overly formal, but price isn't a major consideration. Biggest criteria is we need to accommodate a disabled guest who has difficulty with mobility. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

In Huntington, I'd consider Honu Kitchen and cocktails... no steps to get to the rear area with banquettes and just about the right number of seats by a fireplace for your group... Beautiful room, good food for a variety of tastes. The menu is at the link, and there are always specials... we keep heading back here for the atmosphere and the food, which is a good value: http://www.honukitchen.com/Menu.pdf?P...
Mac's is pretty but the food is just so disappointing for a lot more money... would never recommend it. If that's in your league, try an upgrade to Blackstones in Melville...

Agreed on Mac's. The appetizers and deserts tend to be good, but the steak is always a disappointment. Nevertheless, my folks like the service and attention they get as they are somewhat regulars. I've been to Blackstones once and prefer it. However, the folks find it too much of a scene. I haven't been to Honu, but have passed by and am concerned that it too may be too much of a scene for their tastes.

Honu isn't, except later in the evening at the bar. We hated it years ago in its previous iterations. It's just cozy, especially in the back fireplace area where we like to sit, the food is pretty homey, and not formal nor loud (unless you're at the bar late in the evening). We've come to love it as one of our favorite comfortable, no fuss, homey food destinations after avoiding if for years for similar concerns.
I had two groupon certificates to Mac's and just took the loss on the second one rather than throw good money after bad recently when trying it again after years away. There wasn't a single dish that we liked, and the creamed spinach was so disgusting that when our server asked if we wanted to take it home, each of us burst out "NO!" The steak was supermarket select at best, nothing was good. Barely mediocre diner food in a pretty room at high prices. Bleah.

I hosted a similar event at Butera's in Woodbury.

Very pleased with the food, service and price (we ordered off the menu - did not prearrange a set dinner).
I don't recall accessibility, so please confirm with resto.›1 Reply
