San Francisco Bay Area

Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Recommendations for SF trip... Anything comparable to?

Heading to SF for 2 nights before heading to Napa/Sonoma/Carmel for 3,2, and 2 nights respectively. Have benefited from Chowhound advice in previous trips to Napa.

My GF and I love great food, but aren't are particular about "presentation". Two of the restaurants we love in Napa are Mustard's and Rutherford Grill. What would everyone recommend as comparable restaurants in SF in terms of quality, atmosphere, and presentation?

FYI, we like all sorts of spots, and will be dining at Bottega and Bistro Jeanty while in Napa. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Boulevard might be worth a try:

Thanks for the rec, I probably should have mentioned we typically dont like to order seafood. We're more carnivore.

    2. Forgot to mention we love Italian food(Southern Italian), in particular bolognese sauce on some delicious pasta! So any rec's would be welcome for this as well. Thanks!

          Thanks!

      2. You should post on the California board for Carmel but we just went to La Bicyclette last week & it was fantastic, especially the lamb. Oozing charm, value & service, highly recommended. Rio Grill was good too & could be compared to Rutherford Grill.

        1. The most comparable restaurant to Mustards and Rutherford Grill in the city would be Restaurant Lulu; giant hunks of rustic roast meat from a wood-fired oven.

          1. Hillstone (formerly Houston's) has the same owners and a very similar menu as Rutherford Grill. The prime rib french dip is by far and away may favorite french dip.
