Bread on Sale (Westside)?

Is there a decent bakery that sells their bread at the end of the day on sale on the Westside? I need to make A LOT of sandwiches for an event in Santa Monica, and I'm paying for everything! Thanks for the help.

  1. Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but the Ralphs in Westwood almost always has bread hugely discounted in its Clearance section (ask the staff where that is). Not only does the store offer commercially packaged breads there, but they routinely clear out La Brea Bakery products along with those from their in-house line. The discounts are often as much as 75%. The store puts these breads out on their last day of sale, as indicated on the packaging. Of course, there are no guarantees about what you'll find there on any given day.

Also, you might want to clarify for us whether the bread must be pre-sliced. If you're making "A LOT of sandwiches," then unsliced French breads, baguettes, rolls, or loaves might be a huge added nuisance for you to contend with.

I swear by the ralphs clearance rack as well, but at my ralphs at least, they put it out first thing in the am. So if you go at end of day, it will be picked over.

I'd say check your grocery circulars for good sales and, price bread at TJ's and Costco.

What kind of sandwiches are you making? And do you need sliced bread or rolls? That affects where you should look as well. Good luck!

At the Ralphs I wrote about in Westwood, I often see them putting out clearance breads later in the day. I can't speak for the mornings since I'm never there that early.

    2. There is the Orowheat factory store in El Segundo... you'll be HOOKED UP!

      1. not exactly what you are looking for, but many of the alberson's markets bake their own french bread throughout the day, and irrc it is VERY cheap and, for the price, amazingly good.

the closest alberson's to me that does this is the one on jefferson and mesmer.
if i were in your position, i'd call them up and ask them to bake up a special order for me to be freshly baked and ready at the time i want to pick it up.
