Nashua area news?

Does anyone know about any happenings in the Nashua area? Chipotle on 101A and the Green Grocer behind Five Guys still haven't opened even though they both said they were opening in December. Also, where is Whole Foods going in? Their website says coming soon to Nashua. A friend of mine swears it's going in where Building 19 was, but it still has a sign "for lease" outside. I've also heard it might be going in Merrimack where the old Shaw's was. Things sure are moving slowly in southern NH!

  1. Chipotle opens on 1/10

    1. I just got a menu in the mail today for Yoshimama - Japanese Fusion and Sushi Bar. It's at 427 Amherst St, Nashua.

Hudson just got Mavi Bistro - Turkish

Cupcakes and Cannolies opened in downtown Nashua.

O'Briens and O'Sheas - both bars - are now open.

I saw Yoshimama but didn't know they were open. I hope they're good. I love sushi but it's kind of a haul to go to Dynamite in Hudson all the time.

427 Amherst--Does anyone know which plaza that's in? The one with Thon Khao and Cucina Toscana, or the one further down with the Beer Store?

          1. re: Tante

Google Maps says it's the same as Cucina Toscana.

            1. re: solargarlic

Yeah it's right next door to the cheesy Chinese restaurant in there IIRC.

              1. re: solargarlic

Yup - Yoshimama is right next door to the 98 Chinese restaurat / same plaza as Cucina Toscana.

            2. re: rizzo0904

Where is Cupcakes & Cannollies - I know it's on Main Street but do you know what number (or what it's near)? And, has anyone tried it yet?

the cannolis are very good...i like the chocolate coated shells. i also liked the cupcakes. they are better than shabby chic (IMO).

                1. re: rizzo0904

Have you tried Who You Callin' Cupcake in Salem - they're probably my favorite cupcakes so far in NH. Haven't tried Cupcake Conspiracy in Merrimack ........ I'll have to seach them out too. If I want just a "basic" cupcake, I just go to Crosbys for a chocolate w/chocolate frosting - less the $1 each & they hit the spot.

                  1. re: southie_chick

haven't tried either...haven't tried the new one in bedford either.

i do NOT like the cupcakes at fredericks.

                    1. re: rizzo0904

The one in Bedford is pretty yummy. Lots of odd flavors too which I like.

                    2. re: southie_chick

S-C, I agree, Who You Callin' Cupcake, is definitely one of the better places in NH. I got 6 different kinds in late January and they were all done very well. The cake was moist and had good flavor and the frosting flavors were just right.

                      1. re: Lady Godiva

In other cupcake news, Crumb has opened at The Pheasant Lane Mall. I do like the strawberry shortbread cookies & the frosted half & halfs / black & white cookies (I think the glazed ones are too sweet). The frosting is more like a butter cream than a sugar frosting. The cupcakes are OK, & they are VERY filling - 1/2 of one is good for me (& I'll save the other half for later).

              2. The Green Grocer is one I am awaiting. I drove by and looked a few weeks ago and there were no signs of any construction or even a "coming soon" sign.

                1. Just got an email back...the green grocer is hoping for a spring opening.

I was going to say, I haven't seen ANYTHING going on in there all the times I've been by. There is no way it was opening any time soon.

                    1. re: SuperGrover

the problem with that strip mall is when you decide to lease a spot, you have to do everything. it is only a shell. it needs walls, ceilings, floors, lighting. i spoke with a woman who was going to move her nail salon there but it was going to cost her way to much to build it out.

                    2. re: rizzo0904

With all the talk of Whole Foods finally making an appearance in Nashua area, wouldnt surprise me at all if Green Grocer isnt dragging their feet intentionally....to see what is really going to happen...my gut feeling is that Whole Foods would crush Green Grocer and throw them into the compost pile

                    3. Portland Pie Company is slated to open on 1/30.

Well I went to Yoshimama today. Very odd. The sushi was warmish. Not sure if the rice hadn't cooled off yet or what since I got there pretty early but warm sushi is kind of a turnoff.

                          1. re: SuperGrover

Was at yoshimama this week and couldnt have asked for more, even the background music worked perfectly. Everything from decor to the menu is simple, sleek and nicely done...Can't wait to have another meal there.

                        1. Bahama Breeze is opening on 3/12

                          1. Lovin cupcakes and cannolies is trying to change ownership...if not, they are closing their doors.

Not surpried - I tried them once & wasn't impressed. I actually like the cupcakes at Crosby's a LOT better.

                            2. Not sure where to post this, but I was driving by the plaza in Amherst (with the Lowe's / Longhorn) & noticed a sign for The Meat House. It's gonna be in one of those little "side stores" (I think it's in the one by the Lindt store). Not sure when they're gonna open.

Interesting location - there is a Bare Bonz Butcher Shop right across the street , in a small outbuilding in the same strip as Michaels, Sports Authority. I went in once and was sort of a ghost town and didn't really knock my socks off.

                                1. re: Msample

I was real happy to see that. Bare Bonz never impressed me either but I LOVE The Meat House. I make the drive up to Bedford all the time.

                                  1. re: SuperGrover

Totally agree. I often stop at The Meat House on the way home from MHT airport . Bare Bonz is....pretty bare bones.

                                    1. re: Msample

My hubby & I were wondering how the people at Bare Bonz would take the news - we tried Bare Bonz once & weren't too impressed. Haven't tried The Meat House yet but I've heard great things about it.
I did try the place at exit 1 (in the Panera/Barnes & Noble plaza) in Nashua a WHILE back (over a year ago) & that was pretty good.

                                        1. re: SuperGrover

Bare Bonz might as well just close up shop now. No way they'll make it with Meat house around the corner.

                                          1. re: Dave B

I've been to Bare Bonz several times, and used to go to their old location in Pennichuck Square too. It's always either empty or nearly so--I've often wondered how they could stay afloat. Drove past it today and a radio station was doing a live broadcast, and I assume they're trying to bring in new business now that Meat House is right down the street. I wouldn't be surprised if they closed up unless there's a serious increase in foot traffic. I'd be interested to do a side-by-side comparison of some products and prices of the two. Guess I need to go buy some meat!

                                        2. re: southie_chick

I've spoken to the 'people' at Bare Bonz- they have less than zero concerns, which I can agree with- they have better quality for MUCH better price. My husband and I have often referred to the meat house as the Walmart of 'butcher' shops- not even close to 'modern revival' *eye roll*

                                          1. re: Ohbobobo

Interesting. I've only been to the Meat House in Bedford once or twice, so I really have no basis for comparison. We've always liked Bare Bonz's marinated chicken breasts and steak tips. I'm really curious how the prices compare.

                                            1. re: Ohbobobo

                                              Meat House > Bare Bonz

Bare Bonz is always deserted, even before their better snazzier neighbor moved in across the street.

To each their own, but I'd bet $ that Bare Bonz isn't at that location a year from now.

                                  2. According to The Telegraph, 2 new restaurants are coming to Nashua (in the Trader Joe's Plaza) - but it says they're both gonna be chains. Wish one of them was P.F. Changs or Popye's but they not "telling" yet.
                                    http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/busine...
There's also a LOT of action going on at exit 8 / across form the bus depot / in the old Post Office facility - could THAT be where Whole Foods is going in to? Not a great idea since it's only one lane both in & out.

The article also says counter service...so no PF Changs. There isn't enough parking there for two sit down restaurants IMO.

Hadn't noticed the action near the bus depot...will have to check it out.

I'm on the commuter bus every day Rizzo, so I got the "word" from one of the people there that something was going on ......... they're keeping an eye out too.
Like I said, WISH they were putting in a P.F. Changs - HOPE they come to NH soon! There's still plenty of space at the outlet ......... one can dream ............ ; )

                                    2. From the paper it looks like the two new restaurants in the DW Plaza are going to be fast food take out places because they only seat between 50-75 people. There is a lot of activity at the Merrimack outlets, I know there is going to be a Qdoba and a DD but they are also building something down around the corner too. Also there are supposed to be restaurants up on 101A across from Lowes. Lots of construction but no announcements.

I had heard a bank and a Goodwill were going across from Lowes.

                                      2. Another Five Guys going in on DW Highway next to David's Bridal...where Trader Joe's is.

                                        1. New chocolate shop just opened in Hollis.

The Hollis Chocolate Barn will be open Fridays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 8 Silver Lake Road with expanded hours to come.

                                          1. Sausage King store front is closing and going back to food trucks.

Owner is opening Riverside BBQ Company. I hope it's real 'que, but I'm doubtful.

                                              http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/busine...

I'l give them a shot . Not sure what their background in 'Q is . Nashua has had nothing in terms of BBQ for years - I don't count the crap that was Smokey Bones.

In the interim, I'd advise checking out Phils BBQ Trailer over in Milford, at the site of the old police station. Very good meat, OK sides. Had some outstanding brisket there this past weekend on a visit with Gary from the Pigtrip site. Good prices too.

                                              1. re: Msample

Been meaning to try Phil's. I like goody Coles and BTs smokehouse.

                                                1. re: rizzo0904

It certainly won't measure up to BTs, but their brisket is very solid, in Goody Coles range. Just ate there last night. The only funky thing is that he closes early, around 6:30.

                                                  1. re: Msample

Phil's has a BBQ platter deal that we get a few times a season: brisket, ribs (St. Louis), pulled pork, cornbread, beans, and coleslaw. I think it's $40-$50--plenty of food for 3 of us plus leftovers.

                                                2. re: Msample

We tried Phil's over a year ago and have not been back since. I'm wondering if it has improved since then? Or maybe we just caught it on a couple of their off days...I'm starting to think we will have to try it again soon to see.

                                                  1. re: solargarlic

I don't think it rates as "best of BBQ" but we don't travel down to Mass or elsewhere often, so it's an easy trip if we want a BBQ fix. It's decent for what it is (I don't care for the ribs, though nicely smoked, they have less meat than the baby back style I prefer) and we always like to support a local business, and there's nowhere else in the immediate area who offers this type of chow. (And I mean between Milford and Nashua--we tend to go to Phil's on a weekend night when we're feeling lazy and don't feel like traveling far or cooking.)

                                                    1. re: Tante

Last I checked Phil's BBQ trailer in Miford (last year), they pretty much just offered brisket, beef ribs (not pork), and pulled pork. While the pulled pork is nicely smoked, what I'd want to see most is pork ribs! And chicken! but maybe chicken isn't feasible - smoke it, refire it to order, yet keep it from drying out, etc.

                                                      1. re: cringle22

I hear you! Maybe I'm remembering the ribs incorrectly, and they were beef and not St. Louis pork. I definitely prefer pork. We did like the brisket, my husband's favorite BBQ meat. I like the pulled pork too, but I like my own better (it sounds conceited, but it's one of the few dishes I make rather well). I'd love to see them offer a BBQ chicken also. I hope they get enough business that they can expand their offerings. Like I said, it's not the best, but a quick and convenient BBQ fix when we don't feel like cooking.
Has anyone tried the BBQ trailer sometimes parked at the Harley Davidson place on the Continental Blvd/101A intersection? I think it's Gaby's--I had posted asking about it a while back.

                                                        1. re: Tante

Gabby's has been M.I.A. for a while Tante - I don't know where it moved to. Plus, they put a new car dealership in that spot so there's no room for them to come back even for the summer.

                                                          1. re: southie_chick

I'd forgotten about them until I saw a sign that they were going to be there at the Harley-Davidson place for an upcoming event. Just curious how their chow is--a shame their trailer was never open when I used to see it!

There is a new building going up on 101A in Amherst, across the street from Longhorn, just past the KFC/Taco Hell. Looks like some sort of chain eatery based on the facade, anyone know what it will be ?

I thought it was supposed to be a bank. I overheard a woman asking someone from the construction company and if I heard correctly, it's not food related (she also mentioned it looks like a fast food place).

                                                        1. re: solargarlic

I read in the Amherst Patch that it's going to be a dentist. Sort of a shame if you ask me; I'm all about the chow, but that stretch of 101A is really lacking in a convenience store (such as the type I could always use when driving home from work and need to stop for a few things without wanting to go to MB or Shaw's/Stop n Shop in Milford).

                                                    2. There's a Moe's Southwest Grill next to Five Guys on the DW.

                                                      1. Interested parties have probably already noticed this, but the new Market Basket at Somerset Plaza has some produce items I never thought I'd see in New Hampshire, at least not in a regular supermarket - fresh jack fruit, fresh curry leaves and betel leaves, tindora, sour oranges, culantro ... some of this stuff I couldn't even find in Lowell's Asian markets.

The meat selection seems a little bigger than the old store - I saw fresh rabbit which I don't remember seeing at the old store, and a wider variety of lamb and veal cuts, for instance. Lots of Bell and Evans air-chilled chicken, though I only saw whole chickens and breasts, no thighs or wings (might have just missed them). Could not find pig tails, though, which the old store usually had mid-week, and no one could confirm for me if they would have them or not.

I moved back to NH in 2006 and was surprised enough at being able to find things like, you know, more than one brand of hot sauce. But even in the last seven years, the changes in the Nashua-area supermarkets and liquor stores have been amazing - there are so many things available locally now that I used to buy mail-order, go to Boston for, or simply pine for.

Hopefully they will keep those items in stock. When the Manchester MB opened, they carried a lot of interesting veggies, but they have disappeared. I guess they test what will sell - I think Nashua may have more Indian residents, so they might continue to stock.

                                                        2. So what's going in to the old Taco Bell on 101A? There is a sign that says "this project finance by..." and today there were men inside working.

Whats going in behind the 7-11 at the jughandle (near the glass building at Trafalgar) on 101A? They are working there everyday now. I have heard rumors of a Cheesecake Factory but haven't seen any confirmation. Also are the outlets in Merrimack done expanding? I thought there were supposed to be restaurants there but haven't seen anything new.

The Nashua Motor Express went out of business so it looks like it will be torn down. That whole intersection is going to be a mess during construction!! Wonder if they will put up a light there instead of the jughandles?

That has been gone for a very long time, as a matter of fact driving by there last week with my hub, I mentioned I thought it odd that the area back there has never become something other than deserted.

What a nightmare that intersection will be, it is mess now, I've seen so many near misses someone in the wrong lane , then decides to just go into the lane next to them. I've seen it happen both going into the plaza and also when in the jughandle in front of BK and Ruby's. Yike!

That intersection is going to be a nightmare as I expect some people will try to go downtown that way to avoid the Broad street parkway construction. It is interesting how nothing has gone into the Bahama nightclub place. Maybe now with all the new stuff around it will look more enticing.

                                                                                1. re: rizzo0904

                                                                                  1. re: FoodLuvinGirl

                                                                                    1. re: rizzo0904

                                                                                  2. re: rizzo0904

                                                                                2. re: SuperGrover

I have been once, had tacos that were quite delicious, and came with a hot sauce on the side that was legitimately hot - it was sufficiently different from what I've had at La Carreta and Tapatio, though I haven't had the chance to sample their other menu items just yet, the first encounter was a solid one.

                                                                                  1. re: jf147

The nachos weren't any better. Our bartender spent more time unwrapping straws than refilling water glasses or seeing if we had anything we needed (such as napkins when food arrived). As we were leaving, a new waiter arrived who was much more attentive. I doubt we'll be back soon, but maybe we'll give them another try in a few months.

                                                                                    1. re: peku

If the rumors of Agave Azul being related, it wouldn't surprise me at all if you were to find american cheese in use.

                                                                                3. Red Sauce has an "opening soon" sign up on Amherst Street - it's in the Gold's Gym plaza where The Junkyard nightclub used to be (across the street from NCC).

I'm not holding my breath though because I can't remember the last time I've had good red sauce out. In fact I tend to avoid it because it usually sucks so much.

Over the past five years, We worked hard to make our ambition succeed in introducing Real home cooked vegetarian Indian food to the public in general.
We believe we have succeeded in our mission.
However, it has been very tough on our family
and for that reason alone, we decided not to extend the lease.
Through this journey we have made many new friends and fans. We thank you for your compliments,
which gave us the energy to follow through with this endeavor.
                                                                                      Thank you and good bye.

Open: The Tilted Kilt - think of Hooters but with short plaid skirts. It's behind the 5 Guys on Amherst Street.
Closed: Crumbs in Pheasant Lane Mall (that didn't last long). I know when I went by there about a month ago about 9:45AM, Dunks was PACKED - & the girls at Crumbs had the gates down & were just hanging out waiting for 10AM to open. If they were smart, they would have opened at 9:30 to grab the "early birds"& employees at the mall (like Dunks does) - Dunks does a TON of business between 9:30 & 10 'cause they're pretty much the only place to grab a drink or food before 10AM.

I mean, it's fast food, I wasn't looking for gourmet. The mac and cheese was my favorite dish we tried. I also liked the taste of the Indonesian noodles but there weren't cooked quite right and were pasty. I'll go again when I'm in the area and need a quick meal.

                                                                                            2. Anyone know whats going on in front of the old Building 19 on Amherst Street? They are clearing the area in front and it looks like they are going to build. Also there is a sign up now by the new residence hotel they are building by the Crowne Plaza. It says Grille 110 is what is going to open there.

                                                                                              1. Crane is going in where Meena's was....related to Thousand Crane??

                                                                                                1. We stopped by Campania Market in Hudson the other day, a few days after they'd opened. Small Italian market, an assortment of pantry items (brands of San Marzano tomatoes I don't remember seeing before caught my eye), sandwiches, cold cuts, premade foods. We weren't looking for lunch (we'd just eaten at How's Your Onion), so I can't comment on the sandwiches, but the pastries and the arancini from the deli counter were stellar. The sfogliatella was as good as any I've had in Boston. We'll definitely be back, probably frequently.
