Where can I buy a whole duck in Chester County?

CindyJ Jan 6, 2012 08:58 AM

I'm looking for a Pekin (Long Island) duck about 5-6 pounds. I'd prefer a fresh duck to a frozen one. I know of several places where I can buy fresh duck breast, but for this weekend, I'd like to try Molly Stevens' recipe for Whole Roast Duck with Hoisin Sauce (from her new book, "All About Roasting"). Any suggestions? Thanks!

Try Highland Orchards Farm Market (302) 478-4042 http://highlandorchardsfarmmarket.com...

They sell fresh turkeys and ducks for Thanksgiving/Christmas. Ask for Ruth.

      BJ's Wholesale may carry them.

I sometimes see them at the Lancaster Farmers Market in Wayne, although they are often frozen. You might be able to call them and ask for one that is not frozen. Only open Wed, Fri, Sat. Rittenhouse Farms 610-687-3156. They say they accept orders for [inter alia] ducks.

Thanks! I'll call and ask them. (What is "inter alia?") I did call a couple of Amish poultry vendors at the Booths Corner market, but struck out. I've found a few other places (Country Butcher in Kennett, Worrell's in Malvern) that have frozen duck. It seems to be past the fresh duck season for most retailers.

Inter alia = among other things. Maybe I read too many British publications.

Thanks for the explanation. I'd been thinking it was a kind of exotic duck. :-)
