Does Crisco Go Bad?

bbqboy Jan 5, 2012 09:19 AM

Rooting around the cupboards, we found an unopened can off Crisco with an expiration date of
August 2008. What could go wrong? :)
In the interest of science, should we be guinea pigs and try it?

It does go bad, but in my experience you can tell when that happens. It takes on a waxy texture and appearance, and smells different/bad. I would probably open it out of curiosity, but Crisco is fairly inexpensive, so I wouldn't be upset about tossing it.

Found an 18 month past best by sealed can that did me in for almost a week.

OK, that convinced me to give it to a vegetable diesel fan.

Yes, its oil - hydrogenated, but still oil and oil does go bad. I've had pies where its pretty clear that they used the old left over crisco for the crustt. Pffft.
